Everything but football

We've got nationally competitive programs in pretty much every sport except football. From the flag-planting that the men's bball team did this year, volleyball being elite as usual, women's bball also going to the tournament, wrestling finishing in the top 5, the baseball and softball teams both kicking butt thus far (and I'm sure I'm missing a lot), it seems like the entire athletic department has got it figured out...

I need for the Husker football staff to send spies in to these other departments and figure out what they're doing.

While I really like HCMR, he needs to figure out quickly how to get us out of 5-7 win season funk. Yes, better than Frost but that isn’t the bar nor should it be. With a respectable schedule this year, getting to 8 or better wins would be a good start to showing the football program is contributing like our other athletic programs. It would be difficult to justify retaining him if we end the 2026 season in the 5-7 win range.

I've no doubt that if we get to a bowl game this year, Rhule's job is safe. I said in another thread that if the bottom falls out and we win only 2-3 games, he'll be on the hot seat. I still think that but I don't think they'd fire him considering next years strength of schedule.
Personally, I'll wait until the '27 season, which looks just about as easy as a Big Ten schedule can be. Less than 8 wins in '27 and I think Rhule's tenure at NU will be in serious jeopardy.

Everything but the cash cow.

I’ve been a critic of the leadership we’ve had since Bill Byrne left. FADTA got us back on track and Dannen has elevated. Keep the leadership in place, remain humble/ego-less and things will work out.

I think the patience showed to Hoiberg will transition to football.

I would love to see at least 8 wins, but look at our schedule realistically. We play Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon, all playoff teams from last year. We also play Iowa and Washington, both of whom finished with a better record then we did. We could have a significantly better team and still end up in the 7 win range.

The timeline is shrinking. Fans are supportive but it is no longer the same. 7 wins this year will still do some damage if they cant find an upset in there somewhere. Winning EVERY game we "should" win is positive, but it just feels like the hourglass is getting low. This fanbase is begging for a winner, you see it bleed into the success of the other sports. Despite my hatred for NIL, I would like for these kids in the football program to experience the support a successful team receives. 10 wins plus range.

Regardless of what NU does this fall, Rhule will be at NU in 2027. They can’t afford his buyout, don’t want to afford his buyout. That said, there is a ton of opportunities for the team this year. Michigan State to me, is a HUGE game. First road game, can’t go pull a Minnesota. Win that, you to 4-0 with Maryland coming in the following week at home. 5-0, with the defending champs coming in next. 5-0, some confidence, and a massive opportunity. Really need to be 5-0 at this point. Pull the upset, and get to 6-0, and you’re likely nearing the top 10, especially after beating Indiana. Can’t lose that Michigan State game. It jacks up the whole season if you lose. It’s pipe dreams right now, but that’s what they are looking at. Loads of opportunity.

If he gets 8+ with this schedule, I will be satisfied. That would be an actual step forward. The 2026 schedule is a frickin gauntlet.

How low will the bar go? I think it has happened the fans expectations are so beaten down that we have accepted crap football. And a coach who looks like he rolled out of the rag bag.
