Ekeler Hired By USC

I think Mckewon’s story was the most telling. He thinks Ekler left because he wanted a larger role with the defense but our new DC didn’t want him. And USC will allow him that opportunity. That’s the only explanation that makes sense. Ek loves NU, but he needed room to grow. I get it.

But man, this sucks. He was my favorite coach and arguably our best coach. There are so many players and coaches coming and going now that I don’t even know why I keep following the whole soap opera. It’s nearly impossible to develop much interest knowing everyone has one foot out the door.

One of two great lines from that flick; the other was "are you just gonna stand there and bleed? I didn't think so".
I've seen the movie a couple of times, so here it goes for some of my favorites (in addition to your excellent addition above):

Oh, I know. Let's have a spelling contest. Or...

Well, bye. Or...

Go ahead, skin it! Skin that smokewagon and see what happens. Or...

I'm gettin' tired of all your gas. Now jerk that pistol and go to work! Or...

I have two guns, one for each of ya. Or...

I've not yet begun to defile myself. Or...

Your friends might get me in a rush, but not before I make your head into a canoe.

So it’s a lateral move position wise…nice. Is he promised a defensive coaching role down the line there? Hmmmm GBR

He is a great special teams coach.

I will miss him but life is temporary.

No facts, therefore no judgement.

Queue the special team complaints for 2026.

It’s clear that Ekeler is a good motivator and has been very successful in a niche where you need to motivate 11 guys to exert 110% effort for single plays sprinkled throughout a game. But his history would suggest he is not considered to be the kind of great “coach” that moves up in responsibility over a career. He is 54 years old and has either been limited to a position group (LB) and or (ST) for his entire quarter century career. And he never stays any place long enough to make a long term difference in a program. He was a co-dc at Indiana from 2011-2012, but has not held that a role greater than LB/ST since then.

He seems like a niche coach whose specialty is getting the most out of a group of players in a very finite part of the game, but a part that is critical to a team’s success. Hopefully his one year here has sparked the special teams apparatus here and shown what can be done.

Sometimes you ask yourself, was 2025 ST that great, or was 2024 just so bad it makes 2025 look great. I think it had it's high points, but on a whole it seemed kind of average or just above average.

I would caution against callng special teams coaching/coordinating niche. ST is a 1/3rd of the game and there is a reason Nebraska offered him top 2 National ST Coordinator salary. And they did that mid season. The guy made a huge difference. He started an Australia kicker pipeline as well.

Some folks need to check the other side of the fence to find out that, indeed, the grass isn't as green over there.

Plus, the only way that I'm moving to LA with the current local and state leadership is if I was stupid enough to lose a bet that I shouldn't have made.
I hear ya. I have lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Florida. Now I live in Texas. I have found out that when you have money, it really does not matter what the "leadership" is. Unless you are into that stuff, I guess it may matter lol
