Does Coach Rhule need to announce a DC to stop the portal bleeding?

Actually if you go by what Rhule said in his press conference he mentioned 85 scholarships, and about 20 nil deals, which would put you around the 105 number. From there we probably add in around 30 or so walk ons with no NIL money to get us to that 130 to 135 number we had.

If about the same number of recruits come in as seniors go out that's a wash. But it sounds like besides the 20 recruits signed today, they may want to add 10 or more portal transfers. I still think we see 30 or more guys that will need to leave. Some of those guys may not go in the portal, they may just quit football.
That 20 seems a little high for the NIL deals but I have no way of arguing it. Other than what I'm seeing it on the field. Who over 2 deep ever contributes and 85 scholarship and 20 NIL deals means we are almost 5 deep at every spot. And we are a .500 team. I actually hope we get rid of everything over 85 and go to the portal for the last 20. Problem is the good teams will stockpile and the teams that have plenty of excess will let all that go and its gonna flood the portal with walk-ons.

Well maybe some of those scholarship guys weren't contributing as much, or some of the NIL guys weren't worth the NIL money they got. I'm just going by what he said at the press conference.

I was really worried about the DC position. With HCMR saying in his presser that he has had a lot of people contacting him about the position calms my nerves. Sounds like he will be able to take his time and make a good pick. Man to be a fly on the wall listening who has contacted him!

Here is what Rhule said today.

Rhule said he changed with the portal. He compared it to NFL free agency. Says they need to get down to 70 players to accommodate new recruits and taking new players from the portal. 10 players already in the portal.

Get down to 70 players. Add the 20 signings today, that leaves 15 to pick up in the portal. 105 man roster.

But that also means if we currently have 130 players on the roster, 60 of them have to go.
Wow. That is exactly what I would like to see. I just don't see us having any contributors right now above that 70. I think we have close to 50 walk ons. Add that to the ones that have announced and we are there.

To me, it seems like they shored things up with the recruiting class and current players, so now he can take his time and interview candidates. I was worried that they were going to have to hustle to get a replacement. It still could be Butler, but I'm glad they're going to look at other candidates too.
My take away is that it's Butler's to lose.

Yeah but it sure is hard for 60 players that have to leave, many probably never playing football again. But then look at how many meals they won't have to fix every day, should have a lot on the food bill.

But here is where Rhule's time in the NFL may be a big help. He's already looking at this like an NFL team, 53 players that will play, and 53 that are part of the developmental team working their way up.

I think Butler has the edge, but I do think if Rhule finds the right guy he could go that way. Sure Butler may be ticked off and leave, but you can always find another DB coach. Of course Rhule did say the players have voiced their opinion and a lot of them really like Butler.

I think so too, but I think Rhule is going to keep his eyes open with other candidates as well. We've got at least 3 weeks until the bowl game, if nothing is announced by then, I'm thinking Butler will be the DC as long as he doesn't completely suck in the bowl game.

He said essentially he is treating it like an NFL roster where he has a 53-man roster of starters and 52 in a developmental roll.

In the presser today, Rhule confirmed that this year the school covered 85 scholarships and NIL financed another 20 players so the staff got some practice in accounting for the 105 cap. With players having unlimited transfers, it will be much harder for teams to stockpile talent unless the kids are willing to give up playing time for money. But even then, there will be lots of competition between teams willing to pay bigtime players. Financial management is going to be an essential part of top tier programs going forward.

It’s interesting how we both took it differently. I took it as Butter wasn’t for sure the guy. I feel like if he brought him in because White might leave, he would just tell us. This made me feel like that wasn’t the plan. I wouldn’t be shocked if it was Butter though.

Yeah, all in how you hear it for sure. I took it to mean he wants to see how Butler runs things the next 3 weeks and if he does well, it's his job. Or perhaps, he's the frontrunner depending on who else is interested. I'm guessing if Leonard was willing to come, he'd get it. But if it's someone that's less than "sure fire" like that, it's Butler's if all goes well.

Interesting to watch for sure!

I think Rhule alluded to the fact when he brought Butler in it was in part because of his DC experience and the possibility of White leaving. Which does make you think Butler should have been a done deal when White left, yet he isn't and Rhule is still looking.

Yes, that is my concern. Is he or isn’t he?

PS….I liked Kai Wallin. Athletic kid.
