As for Herbie - the first change was made by Bill Bryne. I remember the person in the "new & improved" Herbie costume almost put me in a chokehold because I referred to him as "Scurrvy" at a Neebrasketball game. I'm struggling to find a good image, but he had a distorted face, and a grey-ish skin tone.
Pedersen is responsible for the current version (i.e. business casual Herbie) as Herb traded in his bibs for a snappy polo shirt.
I too favor going back to the "classic" Herbie, but I know that ship has sailed. As long as UNL owns the rights to put old Herbie on faux-vintage t-shirts that cost $30, nobody inside the athletic department is going to do anything, and my guess is Osborne has probably spent a total of 2 minutes worrying about mascots since he took over the AD job.
