Got the call from Vince Ferragamo letting me know. Very, very sad day in Husker land.
Dave became a very special friend and always enjoyed talking to my mother and treated her very specially.
I first met Dave when I did an interview with him over the phone in 2004. At that time he was self conscious about people seeing him in a wheelchair and wouldn't let me come to his house to interview him even though I was going to be in Las Vegas. Later we talked a lot over the phone and I asked about him signing some footballs. He said "Bring them over." To me that was like getting an invitation to Buckingham Palace or the White House. Donna and I took the footballs and he signed them all and we spent the afternoon talking Husker football.
Since then we stayed in regular contact and he even took me to a meeting with the head of marketing for the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau. He was the impetus for the start of the Nebraska Greats Foundation and one of the first beneficiaries of the Foundation that is run by Jerry Murtaugh.
Dave was one of the most inspirational people I have ever met and he never complained about his illness. He was a doting father to his daughter, Courtney, and gave every signing check I gave him to her college fund. It's kind of hard to type through tears so I will find some of those pictures and post them in this thread.
