Play calling? Let’s hear which were mind numbingly bad? I saw some poor execution, but I didn’t see much in the calls that were problematic.

I thought the first half was almost genius. I admit it was pass heavy from the beginning and that was part of why it was so great. It really opened up the run game. What killed us in the first half was field position. We were gaining 20-30 yards from our starting position and getting stalled with 4th and 1. But then we’d punt it away, hold them to 3 and out and watch their special teams get that 20-30 yards back.

By all accounts the second half wasn’t called as good. There were certainly some execution issues. A couple of mind puzzling passes that were so bad that I had to ask if the quarterback and receiver were on the same page.

Bringing in Heinrich when the offense was moving and he was lucky not to throw a pick. TE reverse when the offense was moving and Dowdell was getting 6 yards a pop between the tackles.
Just incredibly unnecessary calls in those situations, especially in a low scoring game.

At the very least run the actual Down line option pass play what ever HH did was not that nor did it really fool anyone he didn't make them commit to the run. So was that the actual play call or was he to run the option pass but didn't run it to the full extent???

The MLB was blitzing so maybe that messed up the play?

Without threat of a pitch or handoff Iowa was sitting on rushing HH as hard as possible when they saw him enter the game

A defender had basically a free release and was in Haarberg's face before much could be done. He threw early and off balance because the defender was right there in his grill so fast.

There were several series with swing and screen passes that went nowhere, again. Call it poor execution but at this point, we know we can't block for those.

Couldn't do much to get Barney free either.

Any play that was a pass that required blocking for more than 3 seconds. Sometimes the time was there, but often not. Needed to get help on their RT, he was coming too quickly on too many plays.

Let’s not forget that Iowa has an experienced defensive staff/players and they made adjustments to make it challenging on Nebraska in the 2nd half.

Sometimes the opponent needs to be given a little credit too.

That’s not even remotely accurate, we had numerous plays that Dylan had so little pressure it felt strange. Those screens actually did work pretty well in the first half, so ignoring them in the second would have been silly.

The only thing we didn’t do much of was Barney on a jet, but we ran him in that motion a few times. That leads me to believe they were tracking him closely even when he was a decoy.

I would have to go back and rewatch the game but the short side wide receiver reverse to Carter Nelson had me scratching my head a bit.

It was fine, and gave them something to think about. The problem with that particular play was Fidone had two possible targets to block, which would have given Nelson the opportunity to beat just one. Fidone essentially went between the two and didn’t make contact with either.

The series before the fumble wasn't good. It started off great and then he tried to get cute and the drive stalled at the 50.

If by stalled you mean we didn’t go for it on 4th and short? If we make one block on that series we run the clock.

Yes, sometimes you do need to credit the opponent. Not Iowa. Never Iowa.

Turn over on downs or a punt is typically a stalled drive so yes.

I just found the play at the 4:20 mark in the fourth quarter. There were 5 Iowa players in the vicinity of the ball carrier. The play fooled no one and he lost a 1/2 a yard.

The color commentator said he liked the play design but Iowa is too sound to confuse them on a simple reverse.

If Fidone makes a block the play still gets stuffed for little to no gain.

I don't recall the screens working in the first half. Maybe once, but not often.

We scored 10 points. It's silly to think the play calling was fine. What looked different than Satt called plays?

Going away from the run when it was working? Dylan had time on some plays, but not consistently. That means slow developing plays are always going to be lucky to work.
