Was surprised to see being ranked at #16 after going 2-2 for the week but it was against quality opponents. Was expecting either 20-21.

Playing K-State and a respectable Ohio St team also will not hurt their ranking.

On another note, if likely they stay in second in the Big Ten, that will benefit them greatly going into the Tourney as the new format will require only three starters. Just sucks that in any year their record would be good enough to win the Big 10 had it not been for UCLA being undefeated in conference play.

Sweeping USC was huge. It seems they have their starting pitching straightened out. I like this team. (Not great fan of their head coach though). They show a toughness we haven't seen before. They certainly don't quit. The Big Ten has been great for husker sports over all and baseball in particular. In the Big 12 they were more of a local team that none of the powerhouse teams would play. Oklahoma was really the only national team on their schedule. Now they have money and a reputation and they compete with every team.

Actually, the Big 12 was (still is) superior to the Big Ten in baseball.

Wasn't just Oklahoma. More commonly, Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma State were ranked and performing well. Texas has 38 CWS appearances -- more than any other team by far. Occasionally Baylor and Texas Tech produced nationally ranked teams, as well as Missouri, when they were a member of the Big 12.

Yes….but I would argue that with the addition of the 4 Pac 12 schools and the way Big 12 money is certainly less nowadays….

The gap between the Big Ten and the Big 12 has closed dramatically..

They may be a better conference overall…. But I don’t think by much.

I also expect….. that with the way everything is based on money now….

That conference will decline in comparison to the ACC and SEC pretty dramatically over the next years.

The conference to watch I think is the Big Ten.

Because…… money.

What holds the Big Ten back is Purdue, Northwestern, Michigan State, Penn State, and surprisingly Ohio State…. And two of those schools have the money to become contenders if they so choose.

Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, are decent baseball schools….. but are having a down year and perhaps money is affecting them already. Iowa is about as average as they come

The four former Pac 12 schools Nebraska and Michigan I think have fine upper tier programs….. I used to count Indiana in this category, but they have really slipped and I think once again you are saying the lack of money really playing part. Perhaps with the new money making football program that will change.

Pac-12 schools have definitely helped tremendously. Though the Big Ten is still behind the Big 12 in the current conference RPI, ELO and ISR (5th vs 4th).

The gap has narrowed, as you say. Also helped by Texas, OU, A&M, and Missouri all gone to the SEC. Prior to the Pac-12 teams joining, the Big Ten was commonly 8th to as low as 15th in conference RPI prior to the Pac-12 schools joining. Again, now we're 5th.

UCLA, Oregon, and USC are huge boosts. Without them, the only likely NCAA tournament team would be Nebraska. Michigan and Purdue are on the bubble, with DI baseball having both currently out.

Anyhow, point being, when Nebraska was in the Big 12, that was a very good baseball conference (not just Oklahoma). We haven't seen quite that level that since. The Big Ten has a lot of mediocre to bad teams.
