Coach Butler called a great game! Are you all in on Coach JB?

Fortunately for the first time in a while the wait will be a more positive one. The offseason feels a lot longer with no bowl game and a losing record.

No question.

To any reasonable person, 2024 was a success. They checked nearly every box I had as a requirement, with the exception of ‘improve in all phases of the game’. Though there was some improvement on certain things on Special Teams, overall it was at or near the bottom of efforts I’ve seen in 40+ years of watching Husker football.

We went to and won a bowl. Finished with a winning record, momentum and a positive light shinning on the programs future.

I’ll take it.

And overcame some of our worst ST play

There were a handful of really bad missed tackles, but the Blackshirts played pretty well overall.

I'm in the "giving Butler the benefit of the doubt" camp as of now. We'll see how he handles losing several key pieces.
I think he did really well considering the MULTIPLE key pieces he was missing. (Gbayor, Princewell, Williams, Butler, Jackson,Thompson, Wallin). Fantastic job I think. The black shirts did get burned on quite a few screens so there is that. But the multiple forth down stops where fantastic.

My two expectations for this team prior to this season were:
1) beat Colorado; and
2) become bowl eligible.

We accomplished both of them, and also won the bowl game, so expectations were exceeded.

We won 7 this year, which means next year a reasonable expectation (at least for me) would be to win at least 8.

Agee 100% Plus the added bonus of beating Wisconsin. I would add the OSU game exceeded my expectations. Despite the angst from watching some of these games and bonehead plays this year …… it did exceed expectations. So I am pleased yet wanting more.

I tend to agree, it definitely didn't "feel" like we had a brand new DC, that's for sure.

I am tempering that with the fact that it was BC, though.

A couple of things about the 3rd downs that come into play. We had a true freshman play a ton of snaps at DB and though he played well, it’s part of the equation.

I love Giffords effort and the story, but man….missed tackles, bad angles, etc. Not just him, but we need to clean that up.

We blitz more next year, which will be likely, and we’ll be leaving the DB’s on an island. Have to get there more and not just with pressure. I’d also like to see a little different approach with some of the man coverages and how our corners play the receiver. I suspect that’s coming, but we’ll have to wait.
Thought the defense played very well overall, including the new faces. Don’t want to pick on MH but he was responsible for at least 60-70 key passing yds. The early screen play and another decent downfield pass play where he just got lost. Big chunks by one guy.

Side note about difficulties with the screen game yesterday: it wasn’t as bad as it looked from a scheme standpoint. Coach brought some decent pressure and mixed it up a little, which was absolutely a successful strategy against BC and in that weather. A few guys (not most) have tackling issues and otherwise changing direction and reversing field after a rush is the most difficult thing to do in a swampy, muddy field. So Coach BO (no dummy) used the screen game well.

And notice that MH saw the sideline for a while after the early missed tackle. That happened too with Fidone when he wiffed on a block early in the game. Loved that they both were immediately benched to think about it.

100%agree. I know exactly those two plays your speaking of. Kinda of little things like that add up to cardiac arrest for any fan.

For this season I had penciled in 6 wins with a hope for 7 as a bonus, but that was for the regular season. We got the 6 in season, but needed the bowl to get #7. Still, I'll take it and cheer for better next year!

And coaches too, right? My gut tells me that both DH and JB will yank a guy immediately—even if it means playing the water boy—if he messes up that badly.

The bold should be a top priority with spring ball. Some of those 3rd & long could have been stops with better tackling. Not just in the bowl game, but for the entire season.
A few of BC's big plays could have been stopped earlier, but the conditions made it tough overall for players having to changing direction. The field seemed to hold up alright, but it was slick out there. I'm honestly surprised there weren't more missed tackles on both sides.
