Calapari on the move???

There's no law that says smart has to leave this year. I think that's something people forget...there's an assumption he's leaving. I wouldn't assume that. His star will still burn bright for a couple years.

Not assuming that at all. Just saying that if Illinois has him as their top choice we have no shot. Otherwise we have a shot.

VCU has only one senior on their entire roster. Shaka could very well be coaching a top 25 VCU team to start next season, which may be worth returning.

NU will never pay more for a basketball coach than they do football.

That means your budget has a max of $2.775 Mn.

heard Shaka is making $1.3M now. The number NU has tossed out publicly wouldn't be sufficient to lure him.

Base pay is $1.2 million plus performance incentives. (Nobody knows how a mid major like VCU can afford that. They broke the mid major salary market with that deal.)

I can't find out what those performance incentives are but they're probably winning the CAA, winning a game (or games) in the NCAA tournament plus an academic incentive. This year I would not be surprised if he makes a total of more than $2 million. His deal is for 8 years. I would be surprised if the VCU AD didn't include a heavy buyout clause. Allowing Smart to leave without VCU getting paid major dollars would be financial malfeasance.

Illinois will pay more than that because their fan base will not accept being bad in basketball. If Smart gets a contract offer from Illinois I would not be surprised if it's in the $2 million per year base salary range.

Smart will also have to consider that, apparently, VCU, or VCU and George Mason both, may be invited to join the A-10 in all sports except football.

I read somewhere that part of the buyout is that whoever hires him has to do a home-and-home deal as well! If true that's pretty funny.

On the buyout...who knows? Maybe shaka negotiated a relatively low one in return for signing the extenstion...he was, and will be, in strong positions when it comes to negotiations with VCU.

A lot of mid major schools have clauses in their head coaches contracts that say the major school that hires the coach away has to play a home and home series with the mid major school. It helps the mid major school financially and helps their RPI. George Mason fans were rather angry that our AD didn't include such a clause in Jim Larranaga's contract. In his first local interview after leaving Larranaga started laughing when he got asked if he'd bring his Miami team to play Mason.

Calapari will leave the Great Bastion of Cheating if and when he can lie, cheat and steal an NCAA championship and not before. Soon after he leaves The school in Lexington will be on probation yet again.

Coach Cal has said for a wile now that he plans on coaching at UK no more than 10 years, says the pressure and expectations year after year are a grind. That being said, I do not expect him to leave this year. I think Shaka Smart would be a great hire if they can get him at NU over Illinois, and I think he would do well and turn the program around

Is Bruce Weber even worth considering? If he can bring in a recruiting specialist he seems to have all of the Xs and Os of the B1G figured out.
