Brett Maher Named Special Teams Coordinator

my impression has always been that the best special teams coordinators are a bit crazy. not sure Maher fits that. We'll know soon enough how it goes.
I think the specific specialists (PK, Punter, LS, KO specialist) have to be extremely precise. Their form, their technique, their coordination and communication has to be exacting.

The rest … gunners, blockers, chasers … have to be half crazy … someone like Ekeler probably fed that … having guys like Maher and Martin probably helped with the exactness part.

Seems a bit risky. Not saying he won’t excel, but maybe a job somewhere else first learning and excelling would have been wise? I guess we’ll just sit back and see how it works out. Maybe he’s a natural. Let’s hope so.

All Big10 as punter and Kicker, All Pro as Kicker. had to know all 3 phases of the game to excellent at them. I will take someone who has that kind of success playing special teams any day.

Only thing risky here is losing some of the improvements we've seen outside of the pure kicking game.
But you have to ask, why in the bowl game was almost everything returned? That will be easy for Brett to improve upon.

So, because he punted, and kicked FG, he knows all about the coverages, the schemes, the inner workings? Just because he did those things, doesn’t make him, or anyone a coach. He may know about those things, but you have to have the ability to put it all together. By your definition, anyone who ever played automatically knows how to coach, get everyone on the same page, and that just simply is not true. Far from it. Let me add, I’m not suggesting he will be a failure, only that it is very risky at this level.

Nope, the coach just pulled out a map of the field and said, kick it this hard and aim for right here.

One would think he DOES have experience in coverages, schemes and inner workings because he punted and kicked FGs.

Having experience is extremely helpful but as you suggested just because you played doesn’t automatically make you a good coach.

The good news is he does have playing experience and hopefully that translates. Whether he has the skill set to teach, plan, convey and communicate skills and concepts remains undetermined by us. Hopefully Rhule knows. Having been on last years staff under Ekeler should also help … right?

Exactly, it’s risky, especially at this level. Better hope indeed.

For what it’s worth … I don’t think it’s risky.

It’s risky only if Rhule doesn’t know what kind of coach Maher is/can be.

I think

(1) as it relates to specialists (K, P, LS) Maher knows more than enough.
(2) as it relates to schemes, strategies and coverages again Maher knows enough.
(3) as it relates to true coaching, especially the coverage and return personnel, can he motivate and provide effectual leadership. This is the one we (the true fan) do not know. I suspect Rhule does. I also suspect he’s got enough experience on staff to help/assist if needed.

Rhule doesn’t know a damn thing, unless he’s trying to sell you that 1974 Ford Maverick.
