Bo Pelini classic moments

The Love Bo vs. Anti Bo crowd. I thought it was time for him to go. His antics were becoming a huge distraction. His personality was like Bobby Knight except he didn't win enough to get away with it like Knight did for so many years.

He didn't win enough in his later years because his recruiting wasn't up to snuff. He didn't like recruiting. He is a big part of the reason Iowa was able to get into Nebraska and start pulling guys away because he slow played guys.

He didn't win enough because he lost games he shouldn't have lost and because he never wanted to commit to stopping the run because that would make his pass defense weaker.

By the end of 2012 Bo hated being here and coaching us; he was operating on pure spite. He hate the spotlight (fans), the media, and the administration. And unfortunately for him, the coach at a major program is always going to be in the spotlight, and his actions ensured the media was always going to pay attention. His tenure was always going to come to an ugly end, it was just a matter of when. Could have we kept him for another season or two and waited for the on field implosion? Sure. But, it was coming.

The true screw up was Mike Riley. That made zero sense.

Perfectly stated. The problem wasn't getting rid of Bo the problem was hiring Riley. He probably should have been fired in 2013 instead of 2014 also. He dared them to do it after the Iowa game.

I just don't get the hiring of hiring of Pelini (on Osborne) and Riley (on Eichorst) ... and Callahan for that matter (on SP) ... Nebraska most certainly at that time is/was a blue blood program deserving of an established proven coach ... yet we went out and hired a guy with no head coaching experience and a guy who was 0.500 at a PAC12 school.

You get what you pay for and this institution is and was deserving of someone who frankly was better than those coaches.

If I remember correctly everyone was pretty happy with the BP hire. I remember Jim Grobe was a candidate from Wake Forrest, but he wanted to bring his whole staff which TO didn't want to happen. Turner Gill was a candidate, but TO thought he should go with a defensive minded coach.

I tend to agree with you that the search in both cases was not a real deep or long process. There were probably other candidates that would have been suited to the job.

All the love that TO gets is well-earned, and I respect him for many things. Hiring a Head FB coach when he did, and the state of the program then and in the recent past before this, is not one of those things. I believe his nature made him want and need to go the cheap route and ruled out some real candidates that might have led to a completely different result.

Your probably correct on the cheap aspect of it. I don't think he ever asked for a raise the whole time he coached. I do remember him saying something about the salaries of coaches being out of control or something like that.

Coaches hired in 2008 … Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisan, Brian Kelly, Tom O’Brien, Jeff Jadgozinski, Dabo Swinney, Paul Johnson … I remember the same thing about Grobe and Turner Gill.

I also believe as @NUinID suggested that he was trying to protect/retain some of the existing staff.

Well, Bo did lead us to the Big 10 conference championship, so there's that.

Not really Bo's fault that we picked up the stakes in our traditional recruiting grounds.

That’s 25 teams in 7 years, so like 3-4 per year? We’re likely to play 6 in the top 25 this year alone. Including arguably the top 3 teams in the country.
