Bill Moos Book

I dont think it would have been that hard not to hire Frost! I was never convinced Frost really deep down wanted to come here!
It would have been extraordinarily “easy” to not hire Frost. Just say no and hire someone else.

But I don’t think that was the issue in Moos’s mind. It was the firestorm that he understood would have ensued from the vast majority of people who wanted SF to be the next head coach at Nebraska. Moos was no dummy. He knew that failing to hire SF would be seen as him bungling the hiring. We can pretend in 2026 that fans were ambivalent regarding the issue. But that would be a rewrite of history.

Moos certainly could have gone against the mood of the state. But why would he at a time when SF just took UCF to an undefeated season? I suppose, to your point, Moos could have given SF terms that SF wouldn’t accept and then try to claim he was being unreasonable and the program would not be held hostage. But that would have been a risky game as well for someone who was essentially an outsider.

Sorry, but I just don't see that convincing Frost to come was harder than standing up to your boss. It took more time, maybe, and was garder than hiring Kelley, okay, but Moos wasn't a Jr level hire. He was the AD. The hard thing would have been to stand up to your boss and say he isn't ready and I'm not hiring him if that's what he believed.
He could have done that. But maybe he didn’t want to risk the humiliation of being fired so soon after taking the job.

I do not think it would have been “extraordinarily easy” … in fact I think you articulate the reasons why in your next paragraph. Even now with revisionist thinking it is easy to see not only the pressure from fans, but the pressure as well from donors, backers, guys like TO, alumni and internal leadership. Heck even national pundits thought the hiring was a no brainer.

The point is … that FADBM is excusing himself citing internal pressures for a decision he should have made differently. And I think he’s full of crap … he is/was paid handsomely to make great hiring decisions and if felt he was pressured he had every reason in the world to sell his viewpoint up the leadership chain of command.

I was speaking in a theoretical sense. In other words, it could have been done. Just do it. But as you note, the pressure and ramifications for failing to get the “golden boy” were a significant obstacle. Easier said than done for sure.

I don’t doubt that Frost showed up to his “interview” in sweats, unshaven and with his bestie in tow. He always presents like he’s still an undergraduate.

I don’t buy that Moos wanted to pass. Frost had all the leverage, and I’d bet that despite Moos’ retrospective misgivings, it was less an interview than it was Moos selling Scott on Nebraska.

After the 2017 season, Frost was:
  • Associated Press (AP) Coach of the Year
  • AFCA Coach of the Year
  • The Home Depot Coach of the Year
  • Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year
  • Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year
  • AAC Coach of the Year
  • FCA Coach of the Year
  • Lombardi Award (Coach of the Year)
Total no-brainer for Moos or any NU AD. It would have been AD malpractice to not to hire the guy.

Outstanding response. Spot on.

Only way Moos does not hire Frost is if Frost shows up to the interview intoxicated and their are multiple DONU employees who are witnesses to this fact.

Just slovenly dressed and immature does not negate all the other things pointed out by Captain Kenny and Big Red Lebowski that made Frost a "mandatory hire" for Moos at that place and time.

But, would it have changed the "mood" of the response, if Moos would have come clean about his concerns of Frost's maturity.
I lived in Florida for 29 years, including the Frost tenure.
He was "squeaky clean" at UCF.
If Moos, in his position of authority, stated that he was looking for more maturity in a coaching candidate, it may have changed the landscape of opinion.
I truly get why he was hired but, I'd rather go down in flames then sell out integrity for $$$$ and opinion.

He admitted he knew…..when hired…..his job was to hire Frost. It’s not a stand up against the boss issue. You don’t take a job under expectations and then not fulfill them.

While I totally agree with you assessment.

Bill's book would have sold more copies if he had gone rogue while at Nebraska.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this but I don't really consider the way he was dressed/appearing to be this massive indictment on him. The meeting was supposed to be kept in secret, his team was absolutely rolling week in and week out so he was making a dozen appearances on TV a week, and that was sort of just how he went about his day to day during that stretch. It may have been one in a long list of things that came out of that meeting but if his appearance was what Moos was using to determine whether or not Frost would be successful, then I'd say that's just hindsight BS.
