Bill Moos Book

If Moos' job was to hire Frost, he didn't need to interview Frost.

But to make everything look legit, he interviewed Frost.

After the interview, Moos determined Frost was not capable of doing the job (for all reasons stated).

Moos' next responsibility was to go back to the powers that be (his bosses and have them explain to the "donors of substance" that were applying pressure to hire Frost, or directly to those donors) and explain what he "discovered" during his interview process.

I think the pressure to hire Frost would have ended (which could have been handled in a way as not to embarrass Scott), someone else would have been hired, and everyone would have been happier in the long run (but maybe not the short term). That includes Frost, Moos, and the fans.

I disagree that there was much Nebraska could have done to essentially "get out" of hiring Frost.

Frost was the NC winning former QB, apparently still friends with Osborne, and had just completed an undefeated season at UCF. Husker fans had wanted Frost back in Lincoln since Bo Pelini talked to him about leaving Oregon to be the Husker OC. You're right that the internal pressure on Moos would have ended, but he'd have needed a security detail to get to back and forth to work every day. Never mind ever appearing at any games, Moos would have gotten the loudest boos of anybody in Husker athletics history. Moos wasn't the golden boy and home town hero, Frost was, and very few people knew about Frost's "issues." There's no way Moos and UNL leadership win that PR mess by being nice and taking the high road.

The only way Nebraska gets out of the PR disaster of not hiring Frost is to "play dirty" and leak negative, but factual, stuff about Frost. (Not to mention hire somebody who won, and hope Frost fell on his face at Florida or back at UCF.)

Even at that point I don't know if it would have worked, absent the Huskers winning and Frost failing elsewhere, that is. Look at what happened after Frost finally got fired. There was a flood of negative stories about his time as HC. Everybody in the local media and around the program knew about those things when they happened, yet nobody wanted to report them. IMO, that's at least in part because their readers/viewers wouldn't have believed them, because until the end many fans didn't want to believe anything bad about Scott Frost.

EDIT: If Frost wasn't the hire, who do they go get? IMO, whoever they hired would have started with at least "1 strike" against him from the fan base. I don't think you get a Chip Kelly or another top coach to take the job in the midst of the PR fallout. I think it would have been Bill Callahan all over again, just for different reasons.

Which would have been a step up from Frost

He tried. He floated Kelly instead.

Agreed. It's not on Moos that SF became more interested in drinking, gambling, and skirt-chasing than coaching FB. Hard to see how Moos could know what a garbage human being SF would become. The guy must've had at least a few stretches of effort and sobriety to go undefeated at UCF.

So you take the easy path on the most important decision you are going to make and say, "what choice did I have?". Can't do the job, don't take the job.
This is ridiculous. He didn’t take the easy path. Kelly wanted the job. First had to be convinced. Moos took the path his bosses told him to take.

Moos' failing wasn't in the hiring of Frost - he was hired to hire Frost, it was not putting guardrails in place for the inexperienced coach. Rather than creating a comfort zone, with his best buddy Matt Davidson overseeing operations and a hand picked staff, Moos needed experienced administrators and coaches around Frost to keep him in line. This absolutely would have ruffled Frost's feathers, and may have lead to him leaving after 3 or 4 years (if the team had success), but it would have had strong capable people in place to guy Frost, or step in when he crashed.

Obviously, with what we know know, Moos' own vices crossed with Frost's, and much like Frost, he wasn't willing/able to do the hard work. Bad hires all around.
How many AD's get to pick the staff for the HC? Bad situation all around, but it was a no win. IF the AD said, we'll hire you but you have to have ____, _____, and _____ on staff, SF or MD lets it leak to the boosters and Moos has early retirement.

Florida could of saved us the trouble.

I believe Frost takes the UF job and money, if the Gators would have allowed the entire staff to join him.

You may be correct. We, the fans (yes, including me), put Scott on such a high pedestal (based on his history with Nebraska, as the OC at Oregon, his undefeated second season with UCF, and kicking an SEC team that was close to have been playing for the National Championship) that he seemed to be the logical hire.

Boy, were we wrong. The disappointment we get when we put someone on a pedestal.

If someone would have had an inkling that Frost probably couldn't do the job.

As it was, someone did know. But hired Frost anyway, because he was just following orders.

A very good example of failed leadership all around.

When we fans are looking for a reason for Nebraska's mediocrity, look no further than NU Leadership.

Coach Rhule has been stating this since his arrival.

I'm becoming convinced he has some merit.
100%.

Not just AD but University President.

Want to know why Indiana pulled the turnaround they did these last two years? Look up the name Pamela Whitten.

lol, read what you just wrote. by definition, that's the easy path, isn't it? he didn't do what he knew was right, he did what his bosses wanted. the fact that he then had to convince the guy he knew wasn't ready only makes it worse.

He did the job. He was hired in mid October, 2017. Riley was already a lame duck and Frost was already a hot commodity. Moos wasn't hired to select a football coach, he was hired to get a Frost deal done. And he did it regardless of any misgivings he might have had.
if that is true, then in fact he wasn't the AD, he was the fall guy and he had zero autonomy. I would never take a job to head a group and then be told I didn't get to hire and fire my team.

Certainly doesn’t make him look great. And it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s just saving face making up some ‘oh I actually knew it all along’ story. That said I stand by that he realistically couldn’t hire anyone but Frost and keep his job security. Zero doubt in my mind he felt immense pressure to hire Frost.

I also think it’s worth considering that while he may have had a bad interview, there was still reasons to hire Frost. The guy had just won coach of the year turning a program around and played at Nebraska. Moos obviously felt one bad interview didn’t outweigh those things.
I do get that. I can imagine Pelini having a bad interview where someone would say he's qualified, but maybe not a fit here, then hiring him based on other factors.

in my opinion, based on the book, this wasn't just a bad interview, but an interview that demonstrated unfitness for the job to two people. A lack of ability to lead the football program as head coach. I could never see myself hiring a person, no matter what others said, that I felt couldn't do the job I needed him for.
