Big Ten Coaches Talk Anonymously...Time for Rhule to prove them wrong.

Was his pocket presence his fault or the lack of:

(A) Consistent offensive line performance in the pass game?

(B) Multiple different starting lineups of the offensive line?

(C) crappy offensive line coaching?

(D) Lack of separation by our WR group?
Why would you keep the same lineup if they aren’t performing well?

The answers to these questions are self-evident. Rhule fired his OL coach and has brought in a bunch of transfer linemen. You don’t do that when the OL had a solid year.

But two things can be true. There were QBs around the country who would have been able to score more points with the team we had. Raiola has great accuracy and supposedly can read defense well. But his static pocket presence restricted the offense too much. It magnified the team’s weaknesses. I would also argue that he would have been better served to sit for a year and learn before being the starter as a freshman.

I don’t actually blame Raiola. I think he did the best he could, and we’ll see what becomes of the rest of his career. I bet he’ll look a lot better at Oregon, but I’m not sure he’s an NFL player in the making. Nebraska needs to be a college offense. College offenses have QBs who can run AND throw. Now we have a guy who can run, and hopefully can throw. He may be a lesser NFL prospect, but I think he can run a college offense more effectively.

Seems reports out of Oregon which had him fighting for the back up roll were saying his pocket awareness was still an issue and he was holding the ball to long

I saw there was quite a bit of talk about him putting on too much weight. Some fans joking he was moving to the defense line.

Those all contributed, but let’s not ignore that history is filled with QBs who learned to adapt to OLine changes, and less than spectacular protection. Feeling pressure? Take the 3-4 yards and get into the huddle. See blitzes or delays coming? Make a read and get the ball out quicker. The kid is scared to run and really hesitates too much for someone who is supposed to be incredible watching film.

I actually thought the offensive line performed fairly well, particularly in the run game, in the second half of the year.

By my count we had 4 different starting lineups which create stress on that unit, the QB and the whole offense. That is not ideal for a QB. If the unit isn’t playing well, yes you make a change but you do so knowing the change, especially at the O-Line will cause problems … it will cause indecision … it will be disruptive especially to a QB.

Of course Raiola did the best he could. Why wouldn’t he? I believe the circumstances around him caused him to be inaccurate and less productive.

My issue is if you had a QB who wasn’t mobile wouldn’t you game-plan around that deficiency? Now if you have a running QB who isn’t quite as accurate are you going to ask him to make throws that might not be as successful as the previous dude?

I believe our offensive issues under Rhule starts with the O-Line. Our coaching sucked. Our development (especially the later years of SF) sucked. I am hopeful with our two new coaches, the influx of transfers and a game-plan designed to utilize this group accurately will finally mean a solid year offensively.

My opinion only, but I think DR actually has had too much coaching. Too much at a young age. All the improvisation has been coached out of him. It’s all about finding the open receivers and not about making first downs or not having negative plays.

He also had a bad habit of sliding into pressure instead of up into the pocket. I thought he was at his best when they rolled him out. The OL improved by year's end but he didn't get the benefit of it.

Maybe a bit of (E) All of the above. Keys seemingly had the dropsies and when the WR's did get open deep, Raiola mostly over threw them. That said, there was a noticeable decline in offensive production once he was hurt.

Or did the OL seem to improve because there was a different QB

They did a better job run blocking as well so I want to give credit where it's due. Evans and Pritchett ended up being really good on the OL. DR did not help them at all either but I'd still rather have him behind center this year minus the circus that comes with him.

The O line did improve. Emmett Smith is a great back, but he didn't gain 1900+ yards from scrimmage by himself.

I hope Calendrea is the answer. I know he had a really good year at UNLV, but I watched him play in 2 games. Both against Boise St. He didn't look that great in either game and UNLV lost both games.

Damn, can you imagine if we have Emmitt Smith back there. 2800 yards. Easy. :)
