Big Ten Coaches Talk Anonymously...Time for Rhule to prove them wrong.

This really shows what others think. It's time for Rhule to Prove Them Wrong!

  • “They’re in a ton of denial with the quarterback situation. Dylan Raiola is as good as they get as a player and as a person; losing him, I thought he was their last hope. He was the pin that was holding that thing together.”
  • “I don’t imagine they’re gonna do anything special. I think five wins, maybe six wins at the most (this) year. If they hit seven, I’d be shocked.”
  • “(Head coach) Matt Rhule has some great aspects. He can make you run through a wall, but there’s just always so much turnover with his staff. I know that it’s a tough environment for those coaches to be in. Rhule makes it like that on purpose because he doesn’t want you to get comfortable. I don’t want to say his model isn’t going to work, but I don’t know.”

I don’t really understand the comment about Raiola. Yes, he clearly has a lot of arm talent, but his lack of mobility is a major weakness. I wish him well, but I’d be surprised if he ultimately becomes a successful NFL quarterback. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if he never ends up being the starter for Oregon (even after Dante Moore moves to the NFL).

Other than that, I agree there’s little objective reason to be especially optimistic about this season. The schedule is brutal, and I'm not seeing much evidence that we’re on the verge of making a significant jump. Even at Temple and Baylor, Rhule never really showed that he could consistently beat top-tier teams.

Fred Hoiberg demonstrated that patience can pay off, but this team still needs to show meaningful progress this year. Let's give Rhule this year, but if we regress, I think it’s fair to seriously consider whether a head coaching change is necessary.

And they are saying everything that has already been discussed on this board. Most on here agree that 6 or 7 wins is the ceiling this year. DR was good, not great at Nebraska, so I do not think he was the only peg holding things in place. Coaching turnover, it is a dog-eat-dog world out there, and again the coaching turnover has been discussed by most of us on this board. Athlons did not have to work very hard to write this article for gosh sakes. For me, the bigger disappointment was the Penn State coaching debacle and subsequent extension for Rhule. He did nothing to warrant said extension. Rhule is a great spokesman, but I am not sure how good of a coach he is. Unfortunately, we are stuck with him good or bad, for a while because of the extension.

I read the comments on every team and it seems to me these all come from the same person ( some asst coach) the way things are written and said? Anyone else get that feeling? Maybe their response from coaches was not very good this year? Have always enjoyed reading these as you get a bunch of different inside views. Didn’t feel that way.

With that said I don’t really agree with the comments about Dillon. I think he needs to grow in the position a lot to go to the next level. Can’t disagree with anything else that was said about the Huskers. We have a lot to prove.

I think we all agree that the staff Rhule put together the first year left a lot to be desired and needed to be turned over. Starting over every year has killed us. Hopefully we got it right now. Still worried that Holgerson is behind the times on offense. Hope I’m wrong.

My question is how many of you read the comments for other schools? Not a ton of positives except for the top end. OSU, Oregon, Michigan all have high praise. The rest all have something negative said. Even Indiana, last years national champion, had doubts about what is coming up this year.

The truth of matter is nobody really knows how good or bad most the teams in the B1G will be, there is just too much turnover at most schools to get a great bead on what we might see.

My thoughts exactly. Athlon is a cheap rag just trying to get views. And as long as they've been doing this "coaches speak" article, they have never said "HEAD coaches speak about other teams." It could be GAs for all we know. Exhibit A is the QB comments. This "analysis" was not done by an elite strategist.

I'm old enough to remember MRs first DC, TE coach, DB coach, someone needs to remind this coach where MR pressured them to leave, or how good they were without good disciplined talent?
DR is a great talent imo. Was he mature enough to go out and win a ton of games on playmaking alone? Nope, time will change this some.
Great aspects or sour grapes from another coach?

My vote is...

It was not Raiola's mobility (running) that was an issue it was:
1. Turnovers: His ratio of Big plays to Turnovers was not that of a 5* QB.
2. Pocket Presence: He did not grow into the notion of moving within the pocket to buy that extra fraction of a second to either find a check down receiver, or throw the ball away and avoid a sack. At least third of DONU sacks were Raiola's lack of pocket presence.

Colandrea clearly has both pocket presence and running ability. However, he also his issues with turnovers that maybe as much as Raiola's.

Well, you can’t say Nebraska is feeling pressure from high expectations this season.

I like this format, but this year it seems a little anodyne.

I don’t see a hot seat for Rhule regardless of how this season goes, provided they look competitive.

Most staffs, when they’re spiraling the drain the recruiting becomes untenable. But Rhule is putting together a pretty incredible class and still going. There is good reason to believe they will be on the upswing. No AD is going to blow up that class barring a morality disaster. It wasn’t that many weeks ago that people were worried Rhule would get hired out from under Nebraska. I seem to recall Raiola reassuring us that Rhule would stay!

Maybe Conner Stallions gave his opinions "mshrug:
The Raiola quote was interesting he had the 5 Star rating but never really improved His Pocket presence and in year two seemed gun Shy and indecisive at times which led to sacks. He had a Good public persona but I would love to know how team mates really feel about him.

Was his pocket presence his fault or the lack of:

(A) Consistent offensive line performance in the pass game?

(B) Multiple different starting lineups of the offensive line?

(C) crappy offensive line coaching?

(D) Lack of separation by our WR group?

I thought I saw some progress being made, including all that and under the circumstances, but I woulnt call it one of his strong suits.
