Best defenses of all time

The ‘67 and ‘68 offenses were what prompted Bob Devaney to ask a young assistant coach to overhaul the offense. That guy’s name was Tom Osborne.
And to think they could have had Marlon Briscoe at QB. Despite being All-State and MVP of the Shrine Bowl, Devaney never recruited him because he felt he was too short--meanwhile, Marlon was an All-American QB at UNO and then in 1969, was the first black QB in the NFL and later played WR for the 1972 Dolphins undefeated Super Bowl champs. As for Patrick, he was the starter for all of his sophomore season (1967), lost the starting job to Ernie Sigler halfway into the 1968 season, and was third-team TE as a senior in 1969.

They could have had him in ‘67, but he was in the AFL with the Denver Broncos in ‘68. And he would have been a dynamic player for the Huskers. I remember him as a WR in the AFL/NFL.

They were dominant. Glover was an animal. Larry Jacobson was the only defensive lineman in the country who was close to being as good as Glover and won the Outland trophy in ‘71. Glover won it in ‘72. Willie Harper was a gifted outside linebacker (DE in Nebraska’s 5-2 scheme) who played 11 years in the NFL. John Adkins, the DE on the other side was almost as good. John Dutton, who played for years for the Dallas Cowboys though only a sophomore was mostly a back-up behind Jacobson and Bill Janssen. Monte Johnson, who was Glover’s back-up at NG played 8 years for the Raiders as a middle linebacker. Bob Terrio who has to be one of the most under-rated linebackers in Husker history led the team in tackles.

That defense handled everyone on the schedule except for Oklahoma. Aside from the 31 points by OU, no one else scored more than 17 and the average opponent score in those other 12 games was 6.1 points. Dominant. They beat Alabama 38-6 in the Orange Bowl to win the National Championship and that defense made Alabama look like Akron. Rich Glover spent more time in Alabama’s backfield than All-American Alabama halfback, Johnny Musso.
I was 11 years old. How damn lucky was I to come of age at that time?

Sure could have used him in '67--his stats at UNO for 1967 were 140-252 passing for 2,283 yards and 25 TDs, along with 356 yds. rushing and another 5 TDs. Not too bad for a guy who was 5'-10", only 9 inches shorter than the Husker QB.

Probably would have just about doubled Nebraska’s offensive output.

Didn't even need that much---11 more against Kansas, 6 more against Colorado, 4 more against Missouri, and 8 more against Oklahoma at it would have been a perfect season. All close losses, just like this past season.

They had a great defense. Kept them in all those games.

The only Orange Bowl I liked better that the Alabama beat down, was the 72. game vs ND where the Jet ran for 3 and caught 1. Oh, and the '94 game vs Miami.
The 1994 OB was great as well. 17.5 point dogs to the invincible. And yet, if that game wasn’t stolen away, NU probably wins fairly easily. It most certainly doesn’t come down to Byron Bennett.

Not to mention the final rankings had The first 4 #1 Nebraska #2 Oklahoma #3 Colorado and #4 Alabama. Nebraska beat all 3.
