Bear Attacks

I woke up at 1 am last week with a big brown bear on his hind legs trying to tear down our bird feeder (metal pole sunk into deep concrete). Its the biggest one I've seen around here - taller than I am when it was on his hind legs. But it ran off when I turned a light on.

That's the difference between brown bears and grizzlies.

Sorry, but she has a dog leash in one hand, and her phone (camera) in the other. Probably not the meanest looking scenario for the bear.

And I have zero experience with bears. But I wouldn't go into grizzly country without a large caliber sidearm. I don't care if it's illegal, that bear would've had 5 rounds of .454 Casull or 8+ rounds of 10mm in it.

That woman, if this video is authentic, is playing with fire. All for a couple of minutes on social media. Risking her life (which is hers to risk, making her a good Darwin Award candidate) but also that of her dog, which should be a crime. Intentionally risking herself while her dog, acting on his instinct and loyalty is put in grave danger trying to protect her. She should not be allowed to own a pet. Completely irresponsible behavior.

When I was stationed at Peterson AFB it was unheard of for bears to come down into Colo. Springs from the mountains!

Out of curiosity, what would be the smartest response in this situation, dog on a leash and grizzly ambling toward you?

I assume the camera never comes out!

Living in Alaska, I have had bear encounters with my dog. The last thing I would do would be to think about filming it. That said, the lady did a good job attempting to control the situation by being aggressive, controlling her dog and maintaining composure. The bear was seriously hunting the dog, so this was a high risk encounter.

I am always a bit apprehensive hiking with my dog in Canada as you can only have bear spray. In Alaska my 454 Casull is in my chest right now. I would have definitely deployed bear spray or have shot it with my Casull.

I wouldnt have my camera out. That was her problem. She was risking herself and her dog because she wanted to record it. Had she dropped it then she could make herself bigger and gotten into a shelter since it looks like there were buildings around. But I wasn't there so how do I know what she could have done different? Except drop the camera. It is what she didn't do that I have a problem with.

Hiking in Canada sounds like the scene from Aliens when the marines have their ammo collected to avoid shooting in the nuclear facility.
