Tad Fujioka is being remembered less for what he did and more for the type of person he was.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game said he was on a solo hunting trip and had killed a deer, packing part of it out. When he returned the next day to retrieve the rest of the deer, a brown bear with cubs was there defending the carcass.

Troopers and Fish and Game say a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter initially spotted three brown bears — a sow and two cubs — in the feeding on the same deer that Fujioka killed.

Stephen Bethune with Fish and Game said there is no attempt to put down the bears at this time.

“Because of all the human activity and the helicopter at the scene, the bears appear to be driven out of the area, and also, because this was a defensive attack, which — although obviously very tragic — it’s normal bear behavior for them to defend food resource this time of year,“ Bethune said. ”So the department doesn’t have any plans at this time to further pursue trying to put those bears down.”
