We gave up an average of 445 yards per game vs. the following:

440 to Fresno
420 to Washington
486 to Wisconsin
468 to N'Western
418 to Michigan

Without David, we'd have been lucky to go 7-5 this year. Our schedule is every bit as tough if not tougher next year (Southern Miss and Ark St. are not cupcakess) and we lose our two best defensive players. Add in that we will have yet another new coach on D, and I'm sticking with 9-3 as best-case for 2012. I'd be very happy with 8-4.

Yep, unless some guys we haven't seen step up in a big way or Bo comes up with a B1G equivalent of the Peso it could be a long year next season on defense. The offense should be better, so it may end up being a wash.

I still wonder how much was coaching. If Bo is his own DC next year, or a guy like Stoops, is that enough to make a big leap on D? I don't know the answer to that. If we are loaded with lots of young talent on D then why wasn't it on the field this year? They couldn't beat out the guys we saw on the field this year? I know there is a balancing act to redshirting and building for the future and just throwing guys on the field, can't always be an easy decision. But we looked pretty average on D this year in a lot of games. My biggest area of concern is the d-line. We need to be able to generate some pressure from this group moving forward.

Offensively I have little worries other than our qb and his lack of passing skills...defense is a mess...nowhere to go but up though...so I guess there is that

Guess it depends what your definition of "routinely" is, but that's at a clip of 41.6% of the time, so I would definitely consider it routine.

Actually, NU gave up 450 yards or more twice, apparently (I didn't pull the stats, but I'd think that what's his name would have listed all the 450+ games).

2 of 12.

Would anyone argue that NU routinely scored 40+ points offensively because there were five games were we averaged in the mid-40s?

what makes you think those listed teams have more young talent than NU?

Just as one example, OSU's top QB, RB and WR this season (by yards, throwing, running, receiving) were all freshmen. It's the only one I took the time to look up.

So 400 plus yards with an average of 445 per game over a 5-game stretch is quality defense in your book? I gotta give you credit. Your optimism is unshakeable.

An average of 445 over 5 games. I guess "techincally" you are correct, it was only "over" 450 twice, but an average isn't far off at 445, with 5 games being 418 yards or more.
