Atrocious Clock Management…Again!

IIRC, it was more on AC changing up the play at the line instead of being quicker in changing the play or going with what was called. The "wasted" time, was more on AC going slower at the line.

We had a TO. If we don't score the TD, we call TO and kick the FG. We probably lost a play with AC taking his time, perhaps two.

The only thing I question about our decisions really comes after Colandrea scrambled to the 22. We were faced with third and one; also, it looked to me like if he had turned it up field a little more emphatically, he'd have gotten the first.

Anyway, we let 40 seconds run off the clock (and MSU took the time out). So that left us with 19 seconds. Genatone (not Nelson) got the first down on a three yard run (per official stats). To me, I think if you believe in your ability to convert, and your defense to avoid giving up a big play, you snap the ball far earlier. That would give you several more shots at the end zone and possibly the ability to run (as you still had your time out).

The only thing that scared me with Genatone on that reception was the play took so much time, I was concerned he'd get tackled short of the goal with time expired! Obviously, with a second or two we should have gotten a time out called.

All's well that ends well. One thing is it seemed we were possibly playing to settle for a FG, and Cunanan is flirting way to much with the uprights on the extra points. Ten yard further out, and I'd be concerned he'd miss.

Anyway, thinking of all the disasters that have befallen us since 2003, in these end of half (or even end of quarter with Joe Daley) situations, it is nice to actually experience some success! Given how our offense stalled out in the third, it was well needed.
Exactly, the one play that set all this in motion was Colandrea not getting the first down when he decided to get to the sticks then did a Barney and danced laterally setting up 3rd down , instead of 1st down , clock stop to move chains .

That was a problem when he was with the Panthers, too. I feel like younger coaches do a better job of clock management because they grew up playing Madden and NCAA competitively. McVay, LaFleur, Brady, and Sirianni are the best in the NFL at clock management and all 46 or younger. You play 2.000 competitive games of Madden and you get pretty good at it. Then you watch coaches like Angry Reid botch it over and over. I don’t even want to know how many time Mahomes has saved him.

Agree with your take. It ended up fine, but that was not ideal. Things like that will lose you a game against a better opponent. Hope they get it buttoned up.
Time management was the least of the panthers problem during his tenure there.

They could???? Scored a TD with :02 left on the clock. How could it have gone better, except maybe if :00 was on the clock?
No question the ending was good, we got what we wanted. My point was asking Burning Bright what he felt Rhule did wrong.

A lot of arm chair quarterbacking here.

With would've, could've and should've, but the bottom line is that is worked out and we won our first conference game of the season on the road and are 4-0.

Lot's of things to for the coaching staff and team to work on! GBR

Rewatching the end of H1 that is my takeaway too.

AC does have a coolness to his pre-snap execution. To the point where he will take an extra second or two to snap the ball. That’s probably part of his confidence in what he does.

I can’t believe there is a 12 page thread nitpicking the decision-making of a successful TD drive, including getting basic facts wrong such as the presence of a Time Out remaining.

The bottom line is that running that scoring play is a risk. You make a risk to try and get a TD, trying to balance with the chance to attempt a short FG. I like that the mentality was to attack. The QB used more time than expected, but he also (successfully) checked down to a secondary or tertiary target.

There is so much good coaching reflected in that fact. You have a QB with confidence and knowledge of the new offense, able to make the right read. Not just force it to his primary target, or give up and toss it out of bounds. You have a backup player executing his assignment, when he is meant to mostly be window dressing on that play to pull the linebacker to him. You had a receiver making a key block downfield to make the corner of the end zone available.

Why fans can’t watch the game and celebrate the good things from a play like that, but instead look for something to criticize is bizarre to me. That play was a culmination of players taking good coaching. It was a risk/reward situation, with a team that isn’t afraid of that moment. The timid FG option would have been good enough for a team with less heart.

Why, what else did you have to do this week?

2016. Elite Coach Mike Riley took the Huskers to a 7-0 start and was ranked as high as 7th. So, ten years

To be fair Nebraska isn’t well regarded for their public school systems. I’m a perfect example of that.
