Are the Huskers regaining their traditional physicality?

Happen to be in Canada over the weekend so I was not able to watch the game live but recorded it. Watched it yesterday

Aside from the convincing win and many other positivies I was struck with how physical the huskers are becoming. Still a work in progress but the spartans were dropping like flies including backs, linemen, defenders, etc.

It provides more reason to believe that many of the games we have lost in the back half of the season, might turn out differently this year.

On a side note, was perusing the NCAA stats and was pleasantly surprised on where we stand on key metrics I follow
  • Scoring offense 16th
  • Scoring defense 10th
  • Total offense yards 19th
  • Total defense yards 5th
  • Net turnover margin tied for 13th
  • Fewest penalties per game tied for 74th
  • 3rd down conversion offense 10th
  • 3rd down conversion defense 9th
If we can eliminate pre-snap penalties, we could win most of the back half of games this season

To me, red zone scoring offence and rz scoring defense are the key stats. I don't know the exact numbers but I know we are way better this season than years past.

Agree with you that we are much improved

Huskers offense ranked 28th but they covert on 95% of RZ possessions of which the score TD's on 83% of RZ possessions. Clearly for us this is a step change improvement

Husker defense ranked 32nd, allowing points on 75% of RZ possessions. But none of the top ten teams in RZ ranking are ranked in the top 10 polls

Remember that these stats were accumulated against weaker competition.

Our opponents are a combined 7-9 with UND having the best record (3-1).

True but so were most P4 teams records were against weaker competition
Maryland’s opponents record is 10-2 not counting lower division Hampton. Maryland has played and lost to currently undefeated VTech and UCLA. Both ranked teams.

Edit: Hampton is 0-4 and lost first game of the season to Maryland 62-0.

Yes more physical. The D looked a bit winded on the long drive M ST. had for their TD though.
Also the rushing attempts were for the most part tough sledding. The program has bounced up from the bottom physically. Fewer turnovers is the best turnaround point.

I think UCLA got the best coach last cycle. Chesney can coach. I don’t expect them to be a pushover as long as he’s there. They will be a tough out. He’ll have to guard his team from a letdown with the highs they’ve had to date after a rough several years.

The MSU game ended with NU in the Red Zone, otherwise it would be 100%. One FG, the rest TDs in the rz this year. A marked improvement over past years.

Possibly, but too early to know for sure? We’ll have the answers to these questions in 3 weeks. Have yet to play a team with a pulse. That’s about to change, and we’ll know what these Huskers are? They have looked better than they have in a long while though.

100% agree with you.

He’s the kind of guy that I hope Dannen has on his short list … in case of vacancy.

Can UCLA maintain a level of financial competence?
Are they going to keep playing at the Rose Bowl?

We’ll never regain what we had in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Special players, special coach, special times, period. I feel sorry for you if you missed it. The problem is you don’t realize it until its gone.
