Analytics show the offense was to blame for poor defensive showing

It turns out that despite a performance that had more than a few Nebraska football fans blaming the defense for missing a bowl game this season, it appears the offense should have shouldered more ire.

Data shows the defense actually had a 9.4 percent improvement in efficiency over 2018.
On the flip side, the Huskers did indeed see a rather steep drop in offensive efficiency. Last year, the Huskers' offense earned a 60.16 rating, which had them 41st in the country. This year, that rating has dropped to 49.05 and was ranked 67th in the country. Likewise, McClintock says his numbers have the Nebraska football's offensive efficiency dropping by 9.2 percent.

I actually believe this and support this thinking. On offense - time of possession, turnovers, penalties - a key efficiency factors and none were in favor of Nebraska.

Wisconsin's defense statistically was good in large part because their offense was #1 in the nation in time of possession. No one can convince me that wasn't a huge factor in Wisconsin's overall defensive performance.

I still believe that NU's D-Line and Secondary were as a group better than those units on Wisconsin. Would love to have UW's LBs but all in all their defense was better than NU's because their offense was better than ours.

have a problem with this just by saying the D is on field more With the 1000 plus tv commercials and other time outs... how does anyone other that the fan get tired We get tired of waiting for the game to be played only to be interrupted buy Geico commercial

3 hour game has on average 12 minutes of actual play. If it’s anything that has kept the players on the field longer ... it’s the commercials.

If you are referring to the article they took actual performance into account not time on the field.

What are you complaining about?
That's just more bathroom breaks for you.

Is not part of that, time on the field

“The Huskers' offense is built to score points and score quickly. Even when they don't find the end zone, Scott Frost has gone on record often saying the team is not a ball-control offense.
If the offense isn't geared to be on the field all that long, by contrast, Chinander's defense is tasked with seeing the field quite a bit. When the Huskers aren't scoring points, that adds to the level of stress put on the Blackshirts.”

i’m not a graph or math wiz. So if someone could explain in simple pops terms. I appreciate it

Zatecka and his side kick were talking about this towards the end of their most recent podcast.

Hate to pin everything on 1 guy because our OL sucked the 1st half of the season, the LBs were horrible, WRs mediocre etc., but Adrian performing horribly was about a 2-3 game swing. Hopefully next year he is fully healthy, he has more weapons around him, the OL continues its development, AM drops 10-15 LBS and gets out of his head.

2019, even though they scored more points than 2018, averaged less points per minute than 2018. The offense wasn’t more efficient.

I would accept your argument if we were putting up 10 points or so more per game. It simply wasn’t enough.

You have to agree that there is a symbiotic relationship between offense and defense. As one goes so goes the other. If the defense creates more turnovers it gives the offense more opportunities. If the offense turns it over more it puts the defense in bad positions more often. So on and so forth.

Back to your point NU has to be efficient when it has the ball and be more efficient than the other team. It wasn’t efficient AND the defense was still working from behind. Too often they had to be perfect to offset the deficiencies the offense created.
