My son's Father in Law was in the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band... he said marching was real, real, simple, just follow the guy in front of you.
One epiphany. I usually just went to one or two high school FB games a year. Was awed by the Texas HS bands that put the Big Ten to shame. Then when my son was playing Football, and I went to all of the games, I found that they pretty much did the same routine every week! It is easy to get real good when you do the same thing for ten straight weeks. Back in the day in Nebraska, the HS bands had a new marching routine and program every week. Of course there were screw ups, but in hind sight they were trying to do a lot more.
