Gawd, I hope Rhule has better/smarter/more savvy on game day coaches on staff now.... I agree, Farmer and you too, HIO. Coaching, particularly in-game and game prep has been an issue. Huskers just can't keep getting coached into the dirt by the Fleck's of the world.....

Who the hell said anything about just showing up? NU has more talent than all of those mediocre teams, better facilities, better fans, better stadium and more money spent, but you still have to bring it. That’s in the coaching/scheme dept.

Who knows, they haven’t been behind or lost much at all since he got there. They are 27-2 under him with an NC. Yes, you are correct though.

I’m not sure I agree completely with this.

High end athletes tend to be super achievers. Coaching high school athletes more often than not the kids who are achievers on the field also do so academically and socially.

I suspect some of this comes very easily to some but the kids live very structured lives. They workout hard. They keep their grades up.

I will also admit they live their lives with people telling them how good they are … I suspect their egos can get inflated and maybe even a little spoiled.

But I am excited about Trae Taylor coming because he seems very grounded, self assured but knows the value of hard work.

There’s a slide in another thread comparing recruiting rankings over the last 5 years to their average finish (Massey rankings). NU was the 3rd worst in P4 in differential. Retention, development and coaching have been lacking. No doubt.

I bet the other two don't have Nebraska’s resources. No one does less, with more than has Nebraska.

were only bringing in 1-2 high end athletes a year at best......
 
There’s generally a couple of reasons for our mediocrity. Again, generally. #1: Tom Osborne and his unique “shell game” running offense is long gone ( and Solich was close but still didn’t have “it”). Now our offense is fairly similar to many others but we don’t have as many elite athletes as the “top-tiers”. #2: Even if we did have TO at the helm, the running play clock speeds up the game and would make it more difficult to wear defenses down (but I think he would still have major success). Thats it.

Could we ever be a “top-tier” team again? Yes, of course it’s possible. But it would take top-tier coaching to attract top-tier talent and we just haven’t had that……yet. GBR.

In my view we need to be better in:

1) retention (improved from SF to MR), probably good enough now to win
2) development (horrible under SF, better but not good enough yet under MR
3) coaching (not good enough under MR, especially OLine).

2) Define what would be good enough please.
3) If only MR would do something to correct this...sigh
