A factor that keeps Nebraska irrelevant

Since I started watching Nebraska football in the early 70’s, I’ve always thought how confident the team has been when taking the field. They had great coaching, training and nutrition. They walked onto the field expecting to win and the fans expected the same, every game, even the tough matchups.

I believe that very mindset is now keeping Nebraska from being able to turn the corner. Even as the struggles continue, most fans still say, “We should win this game and that game, etc.” as if the Huskers are just naturally a better team. Some call it overconfidence.

I truly believe that mindset is in the heads of many players. You play for Nebraska, you are better than your opponent and will be able to beat them with less effort. i.e. 2025 Minnesota is just one example of many in the past 10 years.

How about we act like we are Rutgers, because we essentially are. No one respects us and how about we use that to develop the “WANT TO” that I think is needed to push us back to relevance?

So sick of mediocrity.

ive said it before sometimes i think kids are pampered way to much. what incentive do they have to work for something, its already been given to them and they didnt have to accomplish anything.

I agree with you 100%. But let’s not confuse player mediocrity with COACH MEDIOCRITY. The level of coaching has been pathetic the last two decades. I truly believe that we finally have the level of coaching that these players deserve.
I believe in the importance of the offensive line is the key to a football team and the coaching of that position group has been the worst in the modern day era of Nebraska football in the las t two decades. But now ……….. I think we got something going. Can’t wait for the season to start to prove me right

I have railed against the blackshirt program for years for the same reason. When a kid who hasn't proven anything is handed a blackshirt, in a ceremony no less, he has to conclude wow look at me! I just joined the club that includes Rich Glover, Grant Winstrom, and the rest! I must be good!

Catch 22 for the University. Pump money into the program and facilities to stay competitive to attract talent. Spoil the talent rotten where winning is secondary to living large. I think you're right; the competitive edge isn't what it used to be. I bet a lot of programs are seeing this as well.
It would be interesting to see how the 5-star recruits develop and move on to the NFL today as compared to 10-15 years ago. Not to stray off too far into the weeds, but the football product on the field isn't what it used to be. It's too soft. It's becoming more self-centered entertainment that team driven, hard-nosed football. Coaches pay is also a culprit. Do they care as much about results if they have 5-year deal worth millions?

I've been rewatching Last Chance U. It's amazing in retrospect how much college football has changed since season one. But you could see why a lot of really talented kids were stuck back in Juco ball. The mindset with a lot of these kids (then and now) was extremely selfish and greedy. But I digress.............

Nebraska is still relevant on a lot of levels, but being a championship caliber level program is not one of them. Fan base, facilities, brand, yes. Winning against top tier programs, no. We weathered a 7-year bowl drought, so I think we can hang in there a few years while the pieces are put into place. For now, I'm ready for another season and will remain a fan no matter what.

It is part of being a fan. Those of us that have been fans since the early 70s have been spoiled during that period through the 90s but we have watched other teams rise and fall and rise again. Situations change more rapidly than before. Hopefully the new current coaches and players align and we have a memorable season, like the Husker Basketball last year!

Spoiled is putting it mildly. From 1969 through 2001 Nebraska never won less than 9 games in a season. Let alone have a losing season. I don't think there is any other school that can say they had that type of run over that period of time. The closest I can think of is probably Florida St. and they are 6-7 years behind that.

I think we still have fans that have the thought process that Minnesota, NW, Indiana and others are still teams that Nebraska should just have to show up and they will win handily, because that is what we did for so many years. It's not 1976, or 1986 or 1996 any more. Everybody has at least some money and everybody has good coaching. Every team is way better than they were in the 80's and 90's. It's just harder to win now, and Nebraska has had a hard time getting back to its winning ways. The team has basically been mismanaged for a long time. So getting everything going in the right direction is taking time.

I know everyone is saying Indiana did it in 2 years. They went from terrible to really good to NC in 2 years. That's an anomaly. Curt Cignetti is a guy that has been working to this moment for 40 years and finally some school gave him a shot. Nebraska never would have given him a shot. Just like all the other Blue Bloods never gave him a shot.

Great post. Some people with selective memory forget how hot Fred's seat was.

We don't act like this now?

Last year, after barely beating a terrible Maryland team, our coach acted like we won the national championship.

If anything it gives me hope because it shows just how coddled Raiola was. That was not an impressive performance for a recruit of his status,

I'm still amazed with what we went through for "BABY" Mahomes who showed his competitiveness by going to a team to ride the pine. He meant we had to struggle through several seasons with a totally inept line coach and we passed on proven QB's in the portal to start a true freshman that wasn't the best for our system.

The Blackshirts are for starters on defense. Its no more complicated than that.
