MATCHUP NIGHTMARE

After a relatively quiet week at the All-American Bowl earlier in the month, Coleman shifted into another gear during the week in Hawaii. He made an incredible sideline catch early in the game and then scoring two touchdowns, including a 35-yard pass where he easily outran the defenders and was wide open. For me, the comparison for Coleman is DK Metcalf, a big physical receiver with straight line speed that is tough to stop.

Freak of the Week

Staying with the two-sport theme, we loved watching Nebraska signee Malachi Coleman in action. He’s another player who told us he plans to run track in college and it will be fascinating to see what kind of numbers he can put up.

At 6-4, he’s long for a sprinter in the mold of the GOAT Usain Bolt (no we’re not comparing Coleman to Bolt, just talking about frame) but he can really run. He raced Branch in a fastest man competition (Pleasant didn’t participate) and lost by a hair and might have won if the race was a few yards longer.

He’s a grinder who worked his tail off every practice and shined in the game as well with five catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns. He’s not as natural catching the ball as some of the other receivers but with his work ethic, there’s no doubt he’ll make big strides in that area.

I saw a lot of JuJu Smith and Michael Pittman in high school and both struggled catching the ball more than Coleman and both ended up All-Americans at USC and 2nd round Draft picks.

Offensive Player of the Week

WR Malachi Coleman (Nebraska)

Had Mauka not rallied to win the game on the strength of Iamaleava, there is a good chance Coleman would have been the Offensive MVP but his performance from the beginning of the week till the end made him a slam dunk for the offensive player of the week. He's got speed, length, athleticism, wide catch radius, explosiveness and a competitiveness that should make him Matt Rhule's signature first recruit.
