2028 recruits?

Thought I'd just stick this here.

With 5 for 5 a done deal, you have to wonder what this means for the four seniors. I'm not sure what pro volleyball pays, but I'd have to think their NIL money here has to be as good if not better. It's clear Nebraska is not like other college teams as it relates to National exposure, even worldwide exposure, and the possibility of lucrative NIL deals.

Could they stay an extra season, finish up in December of 27, and then try to land a spot on the 2028 Olympic team that competes in Los Angles in July.
I love our Husker girls, but I think there is almost zero chance any of them will make the 2028 Olympic squad. Maybe one or two of them might have a shot in 2032.

These players make money at Nebraska. They also get free room and board, access to the best coaches, nutritionists, strength and conditioning and recovery experts, sports psychologists, etc. A lot of pro leagues don't provide all that.

That being said, Harper will make money no matter where she goes. She is young and attractive and has a huge following on social media. Andi might be in a similar situation. I don't know about Bergen and Laney.

For purely selfish reasons, I hope all 4 of them stay. They are great players. Nebraska will be the favorite to win a championship in 2027 if they stay. Plus, they are great girls. They are fun to watch and easy to root for.

So today we have 16 on the roster, and I believe we are allowed 18. We have 5 2027 commits, so clearly everyone can't stay unless there is some sort of exception while this 5 for 5 gets started.

It seems only 1 could stay with 5 coming in. You can't really tell a 2027 commit that all of a sudden we don't have room.

Yes, they can tell a 2027 commit there is no room. Also, they might not have to because if all 4 seniors decide to come back for 2027, I suspect some of the other sophomore and junior players might decide they are tired of waiting to play. Players like Pierce, Cogill, Flynn, and maybe Hunter would be the ones I would guess might consider entering the portal.

After this season DBK is going to have her work cut out for her juggling her roster. In the end she may have to tell the seniors no you can't stay. If no one leaves, and Nebraska has gone two years in a row with no one leaving, do you blow up your 2027 class which you could have 5 years, in order to keep players for just one more year.

This new rule is one of those rules that should have been worked in place over a 2 or 3 year stretch. I would have given players and coaches a way to ease in to the new reality.

That would be called thinking things through. For example, what are the potential unintended consequences of the new rule?

This has never been one of the strengths of the NCAA.

Maybe not after the season. Usually the new commits start in January. The portal is in December. During the season she needs to know if: seniors are returning, underclass players are entering the portal, or ‘27 commits are de-committing. She needs a combination of three of the above to stay at the roster limits. The NCAA Allowing 2026 fourth year seniors to not count against the roster limit for 2027 would be the best solution.

That is a great idea. Possibly extend it through 2027, because of 2028 recruiting being in full swing. This new rule will affect recruiting through at least 2029. The powers that be need to fix it now.
