2025 Nebraska Womens Soccer

Nice start to the year so far for the Cornhuskers. Undefeated at 4-0-2, the team finally has Reagan Raabe back on the field (as a graduate student!) after multiple season-ending injuries in previous years. The offense had been looking rather anemic but a pair of multi-goal wins against Omaha and Oregon State will hopefully wind up being closer to the norm for this season. Last year was rather disappointing coming off the deep run in the NCAA tournament in 2023, but Sarah Weber was signed by the NWSL and currently plays for Racing Louisville, the only regular starter in the league out of UNL.

The team next plays tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 PM Central/2 PM Eastern against Kansas State, which will be a step up in competition before heading into the Big 10 season proper. I won't be able to watch, unfortunately, as I'll be driving to NJ, but hopefully it's another win.

Nebraska remains undefeated, with a 2-0 victory over Kansas State. Kayma Carpenter scored took 3 shots, 2 of which found the back of the net. Sadie Waite had 2 assists and Eva Makovicka had 1.

Also, learned something new, that two assists can be credited for one goal. From the NCAA rulebook:

"a. If a scoring play consists of two consecutive passes without a defender gaining control of the ball, two assists may be awarded, provided the second player does not have to elude a defender to make the final pass. Both passes must have a direct influence on the outcome of a goal scored. If the second player needs to elude a defender before passing to the goal-scorer, credit only that assist."

Next up is a Thursday night match against Minnesota.

Nebraska remains undefeated on the season, and does so in dramatic fashion by overcoming a 2-0 deficit late, earning a 2-2 draw. Minnesota scored in the first minute of the match and after they scored a second time, the match appeared to be over. However, with only 10 minutes remaining in the match, Nebraska scored twice, the first off the boot of Reagan Raabe. The second came from Ella Rudney with only two minutes left to play. A win obviously would have been better, but pulling out the draw, and a point at home, feels very nearly like a win given how much of this match went.

Nebraska has a week off before going on the road to face a powerful Penn State team in State College. Penn State demolished Maryland earlier this evening, 4-0.

And Nebraska does it again - up against 8th-ranked Penn State and down 1-0 with 30 seconds left in the match, the Cornhuskers took their 2nd consecutive corner kick and launched an in-swinging cross that went across the face of the goal and ricocheted into the crossbar and down into goal to make it a 1-1 draw.

Maybe Nebraska will finally get some love in the polls, sitting unbeaten at 5-0-4 and holding up to Penn State.

Well, darn...luck finally ran out. Goal from a player from my kids' high school.

Yes, it had been a poor run the last couple of weeks, losses to Michigan and Iowa that honestly were both winnable. Nebraska dominated about 85 minutes of the Michigan match. Too bad Michigan scored two goals in the five minutes they were in charge to beat us 2-1.

In the Iowa match, we just couldn't finish. Had the run of play fully in our favor, but couldn't get it in the back of the net.

So, it's good to see the team notch a conference win yesterday against Purdue. The goal was a little fluky but I'll take it. Maryland is just above us in the conference standings, and they're up next. Really need to win it. Only 4 games left before the Big 10 tournament (soccer season sure is short), and 3 of those are against top teams in MSU, USC and UCLA. Going to need wins in at least 2 of our last 4 to make the tournament, I think.

Pretty crazy first half to tonight's west coast tilt with USC. Nebraska scored first on about as perfect a shot as you could make, as Ella Rudney drilled the ball into the top-left corner of the net.

But USC would equalize 15 minutes later as a low-driven cross somehow found its way through Nebraska's entire defense and was drilled home by USC.

Just five minutes later it appeared USC had scored again, but USC was ruled offsides and the goal disallowed. Nebraska then drove down the pitch and a perfect cross was headed past USC's GK to put the 'Huskers up 2-1 instead.

As if that weren't enough, a fire alarm went off near the end of the first half, as the BIG+ broadcast crew noted USC had a previous match this year delayed by a fire alarm. Wild stuff.

And Nebraska scores again just two minutes into the 2nd half, with Rudney notching a brace on the night.

If this lead holds it will be a nice (and needed) win for Nebraska.

And Nebraska fends off a furious 2nd half from the Trojans, winning 3-2.

USC was 57th in RPI entering the match, with Nebraska at 76th. This should lift our RPI a fair bit.

Final two matches are against MSU (15th, 2nd in conference) and UCLA (25th, 5th in conference). We'll be 11th in conference after this, with 10 teams qualifying for the Big 10 tournament.

We'll need to pull out an upset in one of those two matches to get in. Last year, ten Big 10 teams made the NCAA tournament so if we can score an upset, there's still a very real chance we can make the NCAA tournament, as well.

Watching my warriors on peacock is a waste of money. Let me tell you about the bench and reserves: they've taken probably 65 shots and made 10 since 2nd qtr!
Grrrrrrrr!!!
