2023 Nebraska Spring Game Thread (4/22/23): Coach Rhule, Players available after scrimmage

It's a spring game with a brand new staff with an unfinished product with many installs not even in play yet

Trying to come to and conclusion based on that if nothing else is way to premature

Lot of guys like Teddy and Casey not even playing etc etc

That is it in a nutshell

RR
Again it's fair if these are all raw talent guys but many played for us and not all are raw talent guys. Coaches in HS and prior preach ball security. If I hear you right, they are in their heads trying to execute on the playback forgetting the basics?

I get you guys wanting to be blindly optimistic, I’ve just grown on from that stage. Anyone who is not a Husker fan that watched this game today breathed a sigh of relief, trust me.
I'm usually lambasted for being pessimistic but it's way too early to assess anything. Gotta give Rhule and his staff time to fix things. Look at Saban when he took over Bama. Inherited a train wreck similar to ours. Lost to Louisiana-Monroe his first season there. I guess you would've been ready to let him go.

+1

Hard to know what you're looking at in games like these. A guy makes a play, but was he a #1 going against a #3? The announcers are talking about everything BUT the game so you barely can catch the name/number of the guy making the play much less who he was going up against.

Obviously guys flash all over the place but what does it mean?

SIms looked pretty good. Purdy looked healthy for the first time in a long time, he didn't look bad. But it is a Sims/Thompson battle in the fall. Don't care who wins, because neither guy is likely to stay completely healthy all season anyway. We'll need them both. Haarberg looked about like I expected--some talent but also some moments where he just doesn't seem to grasp everything. I thought Torres looked like a guy who doesn't fit--nothing personal.

Ervin looked good. Ajay Allen looked rusty. I thought Johnson looked good. I thought Grant looked like the fourth best back out there. Seriously, who many yards can you give up . . . in search of the home run? TAKE the DANG yards aleady! Until he does that, he's behind the others--even though talent wise he is right there.

The TEs didn't show much outside of Boerkircher--who looked good. Gilbert's hands ruined his day. Fidone with only one catch.

Washington with a heck of a grab on the low pass play. Kemp flashed. I was impressed with Fleeks a few times. Couldn't tell much else. Not much to see.

The OL looked okay. Some nice running holes. Some good pass protection. But who knows?

The defense looked ahead of the offense by far. I thought Kai Wallin flashed several times today. Jeudy flashed. Sherman flashed. But mostly, it seemed like front to back, the defenses were playing together and doing their jobs.

Too many fumbles and bad snaps--not unexpected in a game like this. I think I saw three injuries (Jeudy, Corcoran, and Hood). I think Hood returned. Corcoran . . . has he ever been healthy?

Good day to be a Husker. Much work remains to be done.
Looked to be quite a gap between the 1's and the 2's. Need to develop more depth for sure.

They are showing improvement. They won 4 games last year. What did you expect? This is spring game with a new system. Hope your day improves.
Rhule wants physicality that seems to be getting there. D forced some turnovers, some were from mix matching personal, but if the d can swarm and create balls on the ground… when have we last seen that? All n all it’s a spring game, they’ve had a whole 15 practices. I see a big qb battle coming this fall… that’s only when we’ll know what the team is made of.

No time to review this thread right now, but I'm sure I'm with the majority when I complain about all the fumbles. About 40% of the fans left after the 3rd quarter, but it was miserable conditions to watch a practice.

Seemed pretty vanilla all day. Lots of scenario plays I would never attempt in an actual game, but of course this isn't one. Hope the staff got out of this day the things they needed.

Classic example of "negative evaluation", that is looking at what is wrong and missing what is better. A lot to work on, but new system on both sides of the ball. OL better execution, hitting and flying to the ball better, some new personnel with some real talent. Sims was a highlight, 9-13 with a tough run at the goal line. Better enthusiasm and team unity. A Spring practice with a lot accomplished in 15 sessions. Have the summer and fall to clean it up but a lot of potential to improve 2-3 wins over last year, which is a realistic goal.
Agree 100%. A lot to be encouraged by.

It will be very interesting to see how HCMR and his staff address the detail and discipline issues that showed up and escalated as the practice went on.

I expect to see better results from HCMR and his staff than we’ve seen from the previous one or two regimes. Not expecting an undefeated season by any means, but expecting more improvements nonetheless.

GBR!!

That's not what I said

Go back and read what I wrote again

The product we see at the end of August will be light years ahead of what you saw today

Still a lot of work to do and the scrimmage today gave the staff a lot to work with etc etc

I.think vanilla had to do with many installs having not being done yet etc

Agree on all the rest Frank
