2023 MLB Thread

Draft was interesting especially as Husker fan. The Derby seems to be slowly gaining traction in the mold of the NBA all star weekend, which is good.

Rodriguez was crushing in the first round.

The second half poses an interesting question. If ohtani gets traded to an NL team in which league does he win the MVP. As a Braves fan Acuna is running away with the race in the NL, but Ohtani is the most valuable player on the planet and should win the award in both leagues in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm not yet sure if I prefer the clock in the derby to the three outs (IIRC) -- but it is entertaining. Everything about the MLB All-Star showcase is far superior to every other sport. The game itself was great! Loved seeing the NL win for the first time in 12 years. And the Phillies a significant role (Castellanos, Kimbrel, and manager, Rob Thompson). Even Braves fans may tip the cap to Kimbrel. ;)

Crazy stat: the NL is 5-0 all-time in All-Star games the season following the Phillies appearing in a World Series (which again means the NL manager would be the Phillies manager).

I still doubt Ohtani is getting traded this season. Better chance in the off-season.

Interesting note about Ohtani tonight .. Henry Davis. Pirates rookie. Called up 32 days ago. Had two homers on the season coming in (not much) -- but had two tonight against Ohtani. The first player ever to homer twice in a game off Ohtani.

Weird stance. Unique pre-pitch stare.

Ohtani ...... both pitching (3.14 era) and batting (.272 and 163 HR). Two-way player like Babe Ruth.

Trade deadline today. Shouldn’t be as eventful as last year, but should still be wild. Still can’t get over the Royals trading Nicky Lopez. Not that Lopez is a world beater, but a solid bench utility, good team guy, friendly contract, fan favorite, and under team control through 2025. Traded for a guy they easily could have got 10 days ago. Ridiculous.

Relatively boring trade deadline earlier this week.

The best part was watching the Mets dismantle their team. They had -- by far -- the biggest payroll in MLB. I knew before the season they'd find a way to underachieve. It's the Mets -- that's what they do.

It'd be a beautiful thing if neither the Mets nor Yankees made the playoffs.

It really would. FanGraphs has the Yankees playoff chances at 20% and Mets at 4.1% as of this morning. Mets dropped its last 2 to the Royals and have a fairly tough schedule down the stretch. Hopefully the Astros put the Yanks in a bigger hole in their upcoming 4 game series. If they can tread water until mid-August, they can make a run. They have 2 series against the Blue Jays in the last 2 weeks of the season. Very well could come down to that.

By the Mets unloading, they made the Astros even more powerful. Rangers definitely got help, I believe in them more than I did before the trade deadline anyway. Orioles, which I have been pumping up since last season, are going to finally get some media run the last 2 months. Marlins added some decent pieces that should allow them to make a run for a playoff spot.

Giants really didn’t do anything, Padres really couldn’t do anything. I think at this point the Padres just need to figure it out. Find a way into the playoffs and they could be dangerous. Cleveland just handed the AL Central to the Twins and then the Twins didn’t make themselves better. Cubs got a good third baseman but I don’t see them doing anything.

It would be better if the extra inning rule just put a runner on first base, not 2nd. Leave it to the manager to figure out how to get him to 2nd base. It may even bring back the hit-and-run. But make the offense earn 2nd base.

I'm sure the idea behind that rule was to limit extra inning games from going on many extra innings.

I'd like something like you can choose to start with a runner on 2nd, but you'll also have an out.

The Cubs are interesting.

In both the the past 10 and past 20 games, the Cubs have the best record in baseball.

Over the season, the Cubs have -- by far -- the best run differential in the NL Central at +79. The Brewers are -2 and the Reds are -19. In fact, the Cubs have the 3rd best run differential in the entire NL, behind only the Braves and Dodgers.

Very interesting to see how the Cubs perform against ATL this weekend. I think the Braves are clearly the best team in baseball.

I wish the Royals had traded Salvy. And apparently he was open to the idea to the right team. That's the one player (other than Witt, who no way do you trade now) that has value for a playoff contender that could have brought in a decent prospect or two. While I get the "Forever Royal" concept, Salvy is past his prime (but would still have value this year for a playoff team). I feel for Bobby Witt Jr, and hope KC can build something around him. Hard seeing so many other teams that were recently struggling now showing great signs of life through their farm system call-ups and trades made in recent years.
