2023 Big Ten Baseball Tournament Discussion Thread

Iowa is rolling.

5-0 win over Michigan this morning to eliminate the Wolverines. Previously beat Indiana 9-4 and beat Michigan 13-3 in the opening game.

Iowa in great shape for the title only playing 3 games, and getting 7 innings out of their starter today. Pitching couldn’t be in a better spot. Still, I’ll be rooting for whoever they play!

I'd definitely root for Iowa if they play Maryland. I've always felt much more connected with Iowa than Maryland. Obviously, different story if Nebraska is in the championship. ;)

I'll also pull for Iowa in the NCAA Tournament.

Pertaining to the NCAA tournament Maryland gets screwed on their placement. They have to play the number 1 team to advance. Iowa and indiana get placed close to home!
I don't want to hear about the rpi. MD gets jobbed

Winning the regular season and playoffs really did them a lot of good, didn't it?
Btn network has no balls
didn't even bring it up.

A bunch of jackasses.

Second time the Big Ten has been screwed.

Nebraska won the Big Ten back in 2021 and got immediately assigned to the Fayetteville Arkansas regional. And Arkansas was the number one team in the country. Had been all year….a powerhouse.

Same for Maryland.

RPI be damned.

How on earth does Indiana and Iowa get a less competitive regional?

I am totally convinced that a “bunch of guys” go into a “smoky room”, and a bunch of deals are made, and it’s more about television viewership than it is RPI and commonsense for that matter.

Maryland deserved a 2-seed.

The top 16 teams get 1-seeds.

Maryland is not in the top 16 in the coaches poll, D1 baseball poll, Baseball America, etc.

Maryland is not in the top 16 in RPI or ELO.

Which of the 1-seeds would you replace with Maryland and why?

Outside the Big Ten, Maryland didn't perform well this season. They played Mississippi 4 times and lost 3 -- Ole Miss had a losing record this season. They lost to Hawaii, who is not in the tournament. And they lost to a couple heavyweights, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. Those were the best non-conference opponents Maryland faced this season (top 100 RPIs), and the Terps went 1-6.

That said, I do agree putting Maryland in the #1 overall Wake Forest regional is brutally harsh. I do hear you on that.

Making it tougher for Maryland and easier for Iowa and Indiana is absurd and a total travesty! The proof is in the pudding.

The article below says we are losing 4 of our pitchers through the portal or retirement:
Hawkins is retiring.
Hood, Bunz and Lundquist are entering the portal! Sad state of affairs. :Whiteflag:
Here is the article:

Wow. Didn’t see Hawkins retiring. He was the best returning bullpen arm we had. Hood didn’t play this year due to injury, but that is a big loss too. I thought Bunz was out of eligibility.

Bolt will likely hit up the portal again. He gets good players but we seem to lack the concept of ‘team’. I’d like to see more high school recruits.

Somebody like Max would be nice!

Corbin Hawkins had a good year…sorry to see him go.

Jake was too emotional and too inconsistent for me… but when he was good, he was very very good!

The committee actually made it tougher for Wake Forest as well. The clear overall #1 team/seed has to play a Maryland team that is probably one of the better 2-seeds and is capable of playing like a 1-seed.

Anyhow, I'm not bothered by any of it. A lot of their reasoning for placing teams in regional is geographic. Doesn't always work out, but you'll most times see 2-4 teams in each regional that are close geographically -- thus limiting travel costs.

Wake Forest, Maryland, Northeastern, George Mason -- all schools in the Northeast to Mid-Atlantic region.

Indiana State, Iowa, Wright State, North Carolina -- 3 of 4 schools are in the Midwest

Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, Ball State -- Kentucky is in the geographic middle of border states Kentucky and West Virginia along with two teams from Indiana.
