Speaking of retiring Jersey #50 For Dave Rimington, what other jersey number do you guys recall that over the years had just great players wear that jersey number? #93 comes to mind for me.

I was at the game previous to this at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii where Dick Tommy’s warriors gave the Huskers a very spirited fight where the game was dicey until about the 4th qtr. That metal stadium was rocking up until the point we pulled away.

How about No. 30 for Mike Rozier, Ahman Greene, Craig Johnson, Daharran Diedrick, and Bill "Thunder" Thornton.
And No. 20 for Rodgers (Sr and Jr), Ron Meade, Warren Powers, Michael Booker, Josh Bullocks, and Marlon Lucky.

Finished second right? This team was robbed. Huskers coulda, woulda, shoulda won the NC in 1981, 1982, and 1983. Just beat Clemson and show up for the game, don't get screwed at PSU, and kick the point or play better. All we’re crushers.
Perhaps, if we had not let Mizzou upset us in Lincoln the week after the 1978 win over #1 Oklahoma, and leaving us to play PennState for the National title in the Orange Bowl, or let Texas upset us in the Big 12 title game in 1996, and leaving us to play Florida or Florida State in the Orange Bowl for the nattie, we could of had another title--just saying.
100%. Tom could have easily won 5-6 more, with either instant replay, or just making one more play. 1978, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984 (1st and goal on the one against OU), 1993, 1996. Make one more play, or instant replay. Instant replay delivers 2 more, 1982, 1993. It was that close.
Can't blame it on instant replay, but we were likely the best team in 1999, as well. Our only loss was a 4-point upset due to unfortunate turnovers against Texas in the regular season (we lost three key fumbles in that game compared to their none), but we clearly cleaned their plows when we got to play them again in the Big 12 Championship Game in Texas where we held them to 6 total yards rushing, and then beat defending National Champion Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl.
The thing I remember most about that 1981 Orange Bowl game vs. Clemson was that Dave Remington was called for holding three times on 3d down after not being called for holding a single time during the regular season. He was playing against Refridgerator Perry, so maybe the refs saw something I didn't!
One other time the Huskers had a chance for a Nattie was 1983 when they went 10-1 and beat SEC Champion Auburn in the Orange Bowl. The only loss was to Air Force was 13-17 when AF QB Terry Issacson tossed a 40-yard TD pass with about 2 minutes left to play. Even if NU had won that game, a Nattie was still a long shot, because as Big 8 Champs, they were locked into the Orange Bowl and undefeated (and National Champion) Texas was locked into the Cotton bowl. Texas ended up playing Navy with Roger Staubach in that game and won 28-7.

It was the last really great Nebraska team 1999. You could argue 2000 as well, but they had some unfortunate luck. 2001 was a facade. The cracks were showing in 1999 when Carl Crawford went for baseball, amongst other things recruiting wise. I was simply talking about Tom’s tenure. But yes agree, in 1999 Nebraska was the best team in the country. Florida State and Virginia Tech were both extremely lucky they didn’t have to play NU. Hell, I’d make an argument that 1999 team could have been an all time type of team, if it could have just held onto the football. It was the lone setback for that team, which was otherwise nasty. I rate that NU team really, really high, but most forget about it. Hands of stone did them in.

I was 15 when that game was played. I remember it well. Not nitpicking, but it was the 1982 Orange Bowl, after the 1981 season. That is a team Nebraska should have beaten, handily. Just too sloppy, the layoff, press clippings and travel did them in. It was also the debut of the red face masks. Lol. They beat that Clemson team 8/10 times.
