[HUSKER HOT SAUCE]

I would have been about 4 years old, so I don't remember this game, but I'm extremely proud of the Huskers for this game.....

The lead up to the game nationally is something that sticks out to me.

A camera was placed at 72nd and Dodge (then the busiest intersection in Omaha) had virtually no activity during the game.

I was 10 years old, and "Husker aware" at that age. I remember watching in awe. Oklahoma statistically handed the Huskers their hats in the first half, everywhere but the scoreboard. Turnovers were the difference for OU during this game. Players of the game, in my book - Jack Mildren was magnificent running the wishbone for OU. Jeff Kinney was a warrior in the second half, 4 rushing TD's, (hell of a tough runner). and Rich Glover at DT. Glover was getting pounded by the OU line, but he had a knack of sliding off of blocks and racking up tackles, 22 total for the game. Johnny Rogers, of course the amazing return and caught a few nifty passes during the game as well. Finally, Jerry Tagge was a great "manager" during the game. Very cool head, focused.

This game stands the test of time. Worthy of the tag "Game of the Century" Maybe of all time.

At the time, no Husker fan but I watched it live because DT Larry Jacobson (#75) and me was the same school, Sioux Falls O'Gorman high school (Catholic school). Larry was three years older than me.

Maybe some of players from those years could petition for their 5 year of eligibility. I am sure a court somewhere in Nebraska would grant them an injunction.

How things have changed. Our biggest OL in 1971 were Daryl White at 238 and Carl Johnson at 252, while on the DL, the biggest was Larry Jacobson at 250.

At the time of this game, I was living in Northeast Lincoln and working downtown for Cengas. We drove to my parents in Omaha for Thanksgiving and to watch the game. Later on, as we drove back home to Lincoln, we came upon a huge traffic jam as we approached the Waverly exit. On the radio, they said there was a huge gathering of fans at the airport to welcome the team home, so of course, we went there to become a part of that mob. There were so many people there that the plane had trouble getting to the gate to unload the Husker travel party. Cars were parked out on the highway leading to the airport. I seem to recall they said that there were 30,000 fans at the airport. I don't think we will ever see anything like that again!

Another great memory was Jimmy Kubaki hitting a 25 foot jump shot at the buzzer. to beat KU and Wilt in the 1950s. The crowd in the old coliseum mobbed the floor in record time. My buddies and I were in the top of the South benches. We watched Wilt trying to get off the court with most of the people below his arms. At the time, 7 footers were extremely rare. Quite a sight.

I was a senior in high school, and the anticipation during the 12-day gap between games had me bouncing off the walls. I was convinced there was no way of stopping Greg Pruitt. He was averaging 9.5 yards per carry.
