‘Entire’ College Football Team Could Enter the Portal

There is another side to this coin. They won't say so publicly, but I think coaches and ADs at well-heeled programs are fine with the new rules. It's now way easier to "process out" scholarship players who aren't contributing.

Programs with monied collectives will take care of their stars and budding stars with fat NIL contracts. Everyone else is largely expendable.
Top tier programs have been doing that without compunction for some time. Sadly, it will make it easier for programs that hang on to kids after they wash out.
Which brings to mind catastrophic injury and how that will be handled.

It 1000% is a penalty. Doesn’t matter who pays it. It’s a penalty. One free transfer, is why we have 3000 players in the portal and rising, all, looking for the highest bidder. Absolutely must sit out one year should be brought back. It would stop a good deal of this garbage. This, what we have, is BS.
I agree with you but ... it is restraint of trade unless that "restriction" is collectively bargained.

I also think the 105 roster restriction will have a positive impact ... by capping roster size you are telling the world that there are only so many chairs available. There will always be room for the top 10% who want to change but teams are going to find they have only so many "chairs" available and may be less inclined to let players loose and players may be less inclined to leave if there are only so many "chairs" available!

It’s supposed to be a commitment to a school, not a profession. They aren’t on any official payroll. So yes, the schools should be able to have some sort of rules, if you want to play. No one is forcing anyone to play.

It helps protect players from themselves. There are a lot of guys (and gals...and parents....) who get enamored with the idea of playing D1 or Power Conference ball. If you have more than 105 on the roster (and even with 105), you have a number of players who are realistically never going to see the field. Don't drag them along hoping for a chance. Allow them the opportunity to go somewhere where they'll actually get to play.

But through the lens of a player it is a source of income. It is their internship on towards their goal of getting to the NFL. As an employee, your employer looks at you agreeing to work for them as a commitment. Doesn't mean you are bound to them in perpetuity (or even one year).

I will counter with college basketball as an example of where it has not "protected the players from themselves". You have annual roster churn at virtually every college in the nation. Last year there were 31,000 players enter the college basketball portal with only 45% landing at a new school. That means 17,000 players entered the portal and did not end up anywhere!

Yeah, we won’t agree on this. You can’t just have this happening. It’s not even fun anymore. You have no idea who will be on your team year to year. Don’t wanna play by the rules, don’t play. There has to be some order restored. Something, anything.

We agree .... I hate this to ... there needs to be more structure and rules and less wild west. That needs to happen to IMO literally "save" this sport. I just think there is many more hurdles to clear.

To the bold and 31,000 college basketball players in the portal. Google tells me there are only 1,400 teams, 31,000 players seems a bit much for only 1,400 teams,

There are more than 1,400 4-year colleges with basketball teams at the NCAA D1, D2, D3, and NAIA levels. Here are the number of teams in each division:
  • NCAA D1: 352 teams
  • NCAA D2: 313 teams
  • NCAA D3: 434 teams
  • NAIA D1: 215 teams

Just curious as how many of these transfers qualify to be academically eligible to play. Credits need to transfer etc. Seems that education has nothing to do with it any longer. Everyone going to the NFL.

Ok student athletes, which means all sports and not just basketball, that I can see.

Let’s do the math. 1400 x 12 players? = 16,800 players. So this article says that all the players on every team transfers? Are they talking about transfers in ALL sports?
