Lincoln - Freshman Kayla Mershon produced a career high with eight points off the bench and helped Nebraska out-rebound No. 9 Maryland for the game, but the Terrapins used hot shooting to post an 81-63 women's basketball win over the Huskers on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Maryland improved to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten while giving Coach Brenda Frese her 500th career victory. Nebraska slipped to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference. The Huskers also saw their five-game home winning streak come to an end.

Mershon, a 6-3 forward from Chanhassen, Minn., produced eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field including a three-pointer to spark the Huskers in the first half. She added four rebounds and a steal.

Juniors Nicea Eliely and Hannah Whitish led the Huskers with nine points apiece, while freshman Sam Haiby contributed eight points, four assists and three steals against the Terps. Senior Maddie Simon, sophomore Taylor Kissinger and freshman Ashtyn Veerbeek each scored six points, while sophomore Kate Cain pitched in five points and game highs with 10 rebounds and six blocks for the Big Red.

Maryland won with consistency and efficiency on the offensive end by hitting 51.6 percent (32-62) of its shots from the field, including a blistering 58.8 percent (10-17) from three-point range.

First-team All-Big Ten wing Kaila Charles led four Terps in double figures with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while freshman guard Taylor Mikesell contributed 16 points with four three-pointers. Blair Watson added four threes of her own to finish with 12 points, while forward Stephanie Jones pitched in 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.

Channise Lewis added nine points and six assists off the bench, while freshman Shakira Austin managed seven points and 10 rebounds for the Terps.

While Maryland was firing on all cylinders on the offensive end, Nebraska hit just 37.7 percent (23-61) of its shots, including just 5-of-15 threes. The Huskers were 0-for-6 from long range in the second half, as Maryland pulled away down the stretch.

Despite Nebraska's shot-making struggles, the Huskers went toe-to-toe with the Terps, trailing 45-43 with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Maryland erupted on a 12-2 surge over the next 3:37, and the Huskers never fully recovered. NU cut the margin back to seven at 63-56 with 7:30 left, but a 15-2 Terp outburst sealed Nebraska's fate.

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday to take on No. 4 Maryland in a key Big Ten battle.

• The Huskers enter Tuesday’s game looking to rebound from a hard-fought 77-71 loss at No. 19 Iowa last Thursday in Iowa City. Freshman Leigha Brown led the Huskers in scoring for the second straight game by putting up a career-high 20 points off the bench for the Big Red.
• In conference games, Brown, the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, has the highest scoring average of any Big Ten freshman @16.7 ppg (10.4 ppg for the season).
• However, Brown is not the top freshman scorer for the Huskers on the season. That honor belongs to Sam Haiby. The 5-9 guard from Moorhead, Minn., is averaging a team-best 10.7 points per game off the bench. She is averaging 9.7 points per game in Big Ten play to rank sixth among Big Ten freshmen in league play.
• Tuesday’s game will feature five of the Big Ten’s top-11 scoring freshmen, including Maryland’s Taylor Mikesell (1st, 14.7 ppg) and Shakira Austin (8th, 9.0 ppg), along with Nebraska’s Sam Haiby (6th, 10.7 ppg), Leigha Brown (7th, 10.4 ppg) and Ashtyn Veerbeek (11th, 8.0 ppg).
• The game will also have two of the Big Ten’s most accurate three-point shooters in NU’s Taylor Kissinger (1st, .477, 31-65) and Maryland’s Taylor Mikesell (3rd, .413, 43-104). Mikesell leads the Big Ten in threes per game (3.0), while Kissinger ranks fourth (2.2 pg).
• Maryland’s Austin (1st, 11.1 rpg) and Nebraska’s Veerbeek (4th, 6.5 rpg) are among the Big Ten’s top freshman rebounders and both currently lead their teams on the glass.
• Nebraska has eight players averaging 7.8 or more points per game and nine players averaging double-figure minutes. Returning Nebraska starters Maddie Simon, Nicea Eliely and Hannah Whitish are all averaging 8.6 points per game.

Scouting the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins
• Coach Brenda Frese is aiming for her 500th career win in her 20th season as a college head coach.
• Maryland went 11-0 in non-conference play, but suffered a 73-65 home loss to Rutgers on New Year’s Eve. The Terps have used a seven-player rotation early in conference play.
• Maryland’s starting five features three experienced juniors in Kaila Charles (16.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg), Stephanie Jones (13.4 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Blair Watson (8.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg).
• Charles is a 6-1 wing averaging 20.7 points in Big Ten play.
• Jones, a 6-2 forward, has two double-doubles this season and has scored in double figures 11 times.
• Watson is a 6-0 guard returning from a knee injury that ended her sophomore season for Maryland.
• The Terps have two impact freshman starters in guard Taylor Mikesell (14.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg) and 6-5 forward Shakira Austin (9.0 ppg, 11.1 rpg).
• Austin ranks second in the Big Ten with 41 blocks on the year. She has averaged 3.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in Big Ten play.
• Mikesell, a 5-11 guard, has knocked down 43-of-104 threes (.413) this season. She has added 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
• Maryland’s lone senior, Brianna Fraser, is averaging 8.0 points and 5.4 rebounds off the bench.
• Channise Lewis, a 5-8 sophomore, is averaging 3.1 points and a team-best 5.1 assists this season.

• As a team, Maryland is averaging 77.0 points per game while allowing just 55.4 points per contest. The Terps own a plus-14.5 team rebound margin, but a minus-0.4 turnover margin. Maryland is shooting 46.4 percent from the field, including an impressive 35.6 percent from three-point range and 71.8 percent at the free throw line.
• Prior to their 73-65 loss to Rutgers the Terps owned a plus-17 rebound margin (48.8-31.8) but were out-rebounded by the Scarlet Knights, 38-28, including 19 offensive boards by Rutgers.

Strength
Depth. So far this season, the Huskers haven’t had too many standout players. Instead, the offense has been an ensemble act, and contributions have come in from all over the court and bench. Eight players have averaged at least 17.5 minutes and 7.8 points, and on any given night a single player could break out and take over the game.
Weakness
Defense. Nebraska is a relatively young team, currently led by a pair of freshman. And as is often the case with younger squads, defense could be tough in the early stages of the season. That’s been the case thus far, as the Huskers allow 70.4 points per game to opponents, second worst in the Big Ten and 290th in the nation out of 349 Division I teams.

Three things to watch
1. Can Maryland get back on track? The Terrapins have won two of their past three games, so the sky isn’t falling just yet. But as conference play has started, Maryland has not looked the part of a top-five team. In fact, they’ve looked average at best over the past two weeks. This is a good chance to get back on track, but then again, so was Saturday’s home game against the Buckeyes.

2. What’s wrong with Shakira Austin? After four Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards through the first half-dozen weeks of the season, it seemed as though Maryland women’s basketball had the new face of its program. And while we’ll reserve judgement on a freshman for a three-game stretch, it hasn’t been good as of late. Over the past two weeks, Austin has averaged 3.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in just 16.3 minutes per outing.

3. Who steps up for Nebraska? As mentioned previously, the Huskers have eight players scoring often. And while that formula bodes well over the course of the season, to knock off a top team like Maryland, someone is going to have to step up in a big way to lead the Huskers to victory. That could be Haiby or Brown or anyone, and we’ll have to see who shoulders the weight in a big spot.

Might have been a game if we'd made those easy lay-ups and good looks we missed. The difference is Maryland Made 'Em; we didn't. :Redface:

Statistically we hanged with Maryland quite evenly almost across the board; Number of shots taken, Rebounds, Steals, Blocks, Assists, & Turnovers, even out rebounding Maryland 38-37. :eek: Good Effort, Ladies (Grit; No Quit! :thumbsup:) But we left far too many points on the floor from missed lay-ups and open-looks throughout the game. Shooting percentages tell the story; FGs (51.6% vs 37.7%) and 3-pointers (58.8% vs 33.3%). Maryland made their lay-ups and open looks (some not so easy); we didn't. It could have been a different game had we made some of those early misses and maybe taken the lead a time or two.
