Recruits simply don't care what internet fans think is best for them. If we were to try to find the single most important factor in recruiting, it's probably relationships with coaches. We have some coaches who are very good at that, and so do other top P5 programs. How many times do we get into a 2-3 school race only to see the kid stay closer to home? It's definitely a disadvantage vs most other top programs, it just is. That doesn't mean we can't recruit here, it just creates a challenge most other top P5s don't have. Winning can certainly help, but if the argument is "we need top 10 recruiting classes", then we are going to have to start passing on some of these lower rated 500 mile radius recruits.

When higher rated kids transfer where do they typically end up? Closer to home. This is also an argument for going after 1 or 2 top JUCOs every year, most are already used to not being close to home.

"On Friday morning at 7 o’clock, Bleich made the call. Via his personal Twitter account, he announced that he was de-committing from the Nittany Lions. He cited that he ended his recruitment too soon before having the opportunity to visit other schools."

"A three-star prospect, Bleich holds offers from Connecticut, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Texas State and UCF."

"Rivals.com ranks him No. 38 among all offensive tackles in the Class of 2018. He’s considered the 16th-best prospect in Pennsylvania."

Rated a Four Star on 247, Chris' decommit was closely followed by a CB prediction to NU by Mike Schaefer. See also:

No big deal says PSU.

It's why the Lions are in fine shape despite losing a four-star recruit, Wyoming Valley West offensive tackle Chris Bleich, to a decommitment hours after the sun came up on Friday morning, because once the junior started taking visits this spring, to places like Mississippi State, Pittsburgh, and most recently Nebraska, PSU began preparing for the potential that their future and Bleich's might not be the same by offering a few offensive line prospects.

I have to agree with the bolded for sure. We have a coach who embraces what makes the program and Nebraska as a whole special, and an advantage while ignoring the disadvantages, and he has been able to sell those positives to some pretty big prospects thus far. You hear the comments from those recruits and it echoes what most of us on here know makes NU different and special. IMO the 2 (maybe 3) previous coaching staffs didn't appreciate those factors and rested on their laurels, not selling the unique advantages NU has over many other schools (fan base, facilities, investment, etc.). There seems to be a blend of appreciation for NU with wisdom of the coaching staff that is melding into a positive and productive recruiting juncture. That's just my take.

They also seem to be using the peer influence of young men who have been to UNL and seen it for themselves to influence securing at least a visit. Once they get there, anything is possible. Riley has put together one heck of a recruiting staff and game plan to go with it. Things are looking up!
