The Nebraska men’s basketball team saw its season end Sunday night in an 88-72 loss to TCU in the second round of the NIT Tournament at Schollmaier Arena.

James Palmer Jr. scored 19 points in his final game – all in the second half – to finish his senior season with 708 points, the most points in a single season in Nebraska history. Fellow senior Tanner Borchardt posted his second career double-double, finishing with a career-high 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, the second-highest total of his career. Senior Johnny Trueblood also set a career high with eight points, while Glynn Watson Jr. concluded his outstanding career with a stat-filling performance of 17 points, a career-high-tying nine rebounds and six assists without a turnover. Sophomore Thorir Thorbjarnarson chipped in eight points, one off his career high.

Nebraska finished the season with a 19-17 record. TCU (22-13) advanced to Tuesday’s NIT quarterfinal, when the Horned Frogs will host Creighton. TCU had five players in double figures, led by Desmond Bane’s game-high 30 points. The Horned Frogs shot 51 percent from the field – including 59.3 percent in the second half – and knocked down 10 3-pointers while going 20-of-25 at the free throw line. Nebraska committed only seven turnovers and out-rebounded TCU, but the Huskers shot just 43 percent from the floor, 32 percent from the 3-point line and 53 percent from the charity stripe.

Nebraska trailed by eight at the half, but the Huskers were in the game thanks to some unexpected scoring contributions. Borchardt (eight points), Thorbjarnarson (seven) and Trueblood (five) combined for 20 of Nebraska’s 32 first-half points.

TCU led by six early before the Huskers used an 8-0 run to take a 14-12 lead eight minutes into the game. Watson scored six of his eight first-half points during the run. TCU was able to regain the lead despite going more than five minutes without a field goal, but a Thorbjarnarson 3-pointer put Nebraska back on top, 18-17 midway through the half.

With the game tied at 19-19, TCU scored eight straight points during a larger 12-2 run to build a 10-point lead at the five-minute mark. Three straight points from Borchardt pulled Nebraska to within seven, and the Huskers cut the lead down to five, but TCU scored five points in the final 39 seconds of the half to take a 40-32 lead into the locker room.

After being held scoreless and missing all 10 of his first-half shots, Palmer hit three 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half. But TCU answered two of Palmer’s shots as the Horned Frogs extended their lead to 10. The lead was back down to eight before a flagrant foul led to a five-point possession that allowed TCU to take a 13-point lead at the 12-minute mark.

Nebraska, which trailed by at least five the entire second half, was back within eight with 10 minutes to play, but the Huskers could get no closer. The lead held steady between and eight and 13 points for most of the half, until TCU scored 10 of the final 14 points to pull away for the 16-point win.

Anyone have a scouting report on TCU?
Just what I’ve watched, and what I’ve heard from a friend who has personally seen in games he’s attended.

-They have 5 guys who can score regularly, which is a plus and minus for them.

-they have an actual true center who can rebound and block shots.

-they like a faster pace

-they have several 3pt shooters who shoot with a pretty good percentage

-top assist guy is almost a pure distributor. Not a good shooter, but knows it.

-not amazing on defense.

-biggest weakness, and cost them games, is they don’t play well together. Bad attitudes will show on the court.

Maybe the "Dirty Half Dozen" or "MAGNIFICENT 7", (depending on what we go with), can get them upset enough to ruin their game.

I think they either get hot and run over us like train, or they struggle and rollover late when the going gets tough. They do have a kid who has gotten minutes late in the season who has kind of lit things up, but that's taken away from some of the others and it may play to our advantage. They are way more athletic as a team though, which is a concern.

The information about the TCU game originally came from the North Texas Nebraskans this morning. This is why I decided to pass it along to those who may have missed it. I will be there with my son and I hope there are many more that will also be attending. I would love to have a big crowd supporting our team.

As far as TCU as a team, I know they had an up and down season and thought they would make the NCAA so maybe this will work against them. It is going to be tough since we have so few players.

The Husker men's basketball team looks to punch a ticket into the NIT quarterfinals on Sunday night, as the Huskers travel to TCU for the second round of the NIT.

The Huskers (19-16) are coming off a spirited 80-76 win over Butler Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Junior forward Isaiah Roby scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead three Huskers in double figures. James Palmer Jr. and Glynn Watson Jr. added 23 and 17 points, respectively, as the Huskers shot 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 36-26, to pick up their fourth win in the last five games.

The Huskers have battled down the stretch, dressing just eight players because of injuries, and have relied on its role players to make winning plays over the past two weeks. Against Butler, Johnny Trueblood came off the bench to set career bests in points (six), rebounds (seven), assists (five) and minutes (31). Thorir Thorbjarnarson, who moved into the lineup after injuries to Thomas Allen and Amir Harris, had four assists and three steals in 17 minutes of work.

The Huskers are led by a pair of senior guards in James Palmer Jr. and Glynn Watson Jr., who combine to average more than 30 points per game. Palmer is third in the Big Ten, averaging 19.7 points per game, while Watson averages 13.5 points per game and a team-high 3.0 assists per game.

TCU (21-13) tied for seventh in the Big 12 with a 7-11 mark and are coming off an 82-69 win over Sam Houston State on Wednesday. JD Miller's 15 points and eight rebounds led six TCU players in double figures as the Horned Frogs shot 54 percent from the floor, including 70 percent in the second half.

The winner of Sunday's game will play either No. 2 Creighton or No. 3 Memphis in the quarterfinals either Tuesday or Wednesday.
