Huskers look to snap a five-game losing streak following a 71-64 loss at Illinois. The Huskers cut a 15-point second-half deficit to seven, but could not get the shots to drop in the closing minutes to pull closer. Nebraska got 22 from James Palmer Jr. to lead three players in double figures, as Tanner Borchardt and Thomas Allen added 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Huskers out-rebounded the Illini, 50-36, and committed just 10 turnovers, but shot just 36 percent, including 3-of-23 from 3-point range.

One bright spot for the Huskers in the loss was the performance of Borchardt, who posted his first career double-double with career bests of 12 points and 18 rebounds. His 18 caroms, which included 11 offensive boards, were the most by a Husker in three seasons and the second-highest total in the Big Ten this season. Borchardt has grabbed eight or more rebounds in two of the last three contests.

Maryland comes off a 69-61 loss at No. 24 Wisconsin. The Terrapins led for most of the contest before the Badgers rallied in the last 10 minutes for the win.

Eric Ayala led Maryland with 18 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, while Bruno Fernando and Anthony Cowan added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Maryland shot 56 percent in the first half, but Wisconsin held the Terrapins to 35 percent in the second half.

    SCOUTING MARYLAND

Maryland's strength is the inside game with sophomore Bruno Fernando and freshman Jalen Smith, as the duo helps Maryland out-rebound opponents by more than 10 rebounds per game. Fernando averages 14.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, as he ranks second in field goal percentage (.665) and blocked shots (2.0) and is third in rebounding. Smith, a McDonald's All-American, has been one of the Big Ten's top freshmen, averaging 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Cowan, a three-year starter, leads Maryland in scoring (16.7 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg) while freshman guard Eric Ayala averages 9.2 ppg, including 48 percent from 3-point range.

    Nebraska is favored by 1.5.

NU has been favored in each of the last five games. All losses.

This is a good game for Borchardt. As long as he stays out of foul trouble, he’s going to be a help from our first game against the Terps. They ripped us up inside, especially rebounding, so have our own big body is going to help. It might help Roby and Palmer come out of their funk as well, since Roby will match up with someone closer in size and strength. Tanner is also darn good at ‘plowing the road’ when it comes to shielding help defense on drives, which could mean Palmer gets back on track.

Gives "Pulling Center" a whole new meaning... love it when the announcers say that his scholarship offers out of high school were as an Offensive Tackle to Wyoming, NDSU and Ohio. :)

It really is an art, and he doesn’t get credit for it. If his teammates used him more, their lives would be easier.

    The 'Skinny' from another site:

    "
The Skinny: It's fitting that Maryland comes in here ranked 24th as that is where the Huskers sat when they rolled into Maryland and couldn't close the deal against a young Terrapin team. Since that time Maryland has positioned themselves into the top 5 in the conference whereas Penn St is currently the only thing keeping Nebraska out of the basement.

In conference play Maryland has seen more of their scoring coming from the 3 and the FT line, no doubt with teams doubling down on Fernando. Jalen Smith, the X factor in our last game, has the potential to make hay when either Tanner or Roby has to come out and the 6'10" talent is guarded by Brady or whomever we throw out on the court. How well can Tanner defend Fernando without fouling out or without constantly requiring a double team?

Offensively, the Huskers simply need to hit some shots and everything will start to open up. They've certainly had success against Maryland in the past.

I keep telling myself I'm going to pick against the Huskers and yet every game seem like *THIS* is the one where Nebraska wakes up from this 5 game nightmare. Why not tonight?

    Prediction: Nebraska 70 - Maryland 66

I didn't think we'd be leading 15-8 mid-way in the First Period!
