LAST TIME OUT

Nebraska’s struggles from the offensive end proved costly, as the Huskers fell to Gardner-Webb, 70-62, at Pinnacle Bank Arena Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers (5-6) shot just 39 percent from the field, including 3-of-17 from 3-point range, and just 15-of-26 from the line after entering the game 13th in the nation in free throw percentage.

Webster led NU with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, but had seven of the Huskers’ season-high 20 turnovers. Watson, who came off the bench, finished with 14 points and three assists. Ed Morrow Jr. led NU with 18 rebounds – the most by a Husker since the 2006-07 season, along with four blocked shots and nine points.
David Efianayi added 11 points for the winners, who shot 48 percent in the second half and went 12-of-17 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN
Sixth-year coach Roman Banks has built the Jaguars into one of the top programs in the SWAC during his tenure at the Baton Rouge, La., school. In the last four years, the Jaguars have made two NCAA appearances, making trips in 2013 and 2016.

The Jaguars are 4-7 on the season while playing seven road games. Last week, the Jaguars lost to No. 4 Baylor before taking UAB to the wire and losing 75-74 in overtime on a tip-in at the buzzer. Southern returns three starters from its NCAA Tournament team and is an experienced club with five juniors and seniors in the starting lineup. Senior Shawn Phudhomme leads Southern in scoring at 17.5 points per game, including a 24-point effort at Baylor and a 26-point, 11-rebound effort vs. Sam Houston State. Junior forward Jared Sam is at 13.1 points and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game and also had a season-high 24 point effort in the loss at Baylor.
-----------------------
Typical Rotation Depth: 10+/Anyone with a jersey
Line: None
Tempo: Fast Offense
Style: Low Assists/Low 3pt Attempts
4 Factors Good: Not much
4 Factors Bad: Turnover prone, foul prone, gives up offensive rebound
Player to watch: Shawn Prudhomme, Jared Sam, Tre'lun Banks

The Jaguars play a lot of guys but these three are the mainstays, logging 30+ minutes per game and averaging over double digits. Banks is the point guard who leads the team in assists, draws contact, and is a decent outside shooter; he's also turnover prone. Prudhomme is the leading scorer who is shooting from outside at a 47% clip and the second leading rebounder. Sam is your prototypical slender SWAC post player who tends to rip through Nebrasketball with pump fakes all night long.

The Skinny
Sunday was like one of those movies where a bunch of bad things happen to you and then someone comes and kicks you in family jewels. Part of the advantage of a tough lineup to begin the year is that it can prepare your team for the rigors of conference play. However, it can also tear apart your confidence and make you question everything. Right now, the Huskers are questioning everything.

They face a Southern team that has been struggling a bit against a tough schedule but one with so many juniors and seniors that I couldn't believe it wasn't a bunch of JUCO players. While they play a style of basketball that matches up well with what Nebraska wants to run they are going to be a tough out even with a good effort from Nebraska. The Jaguars aren't as bad of a shooting team as they seem and this veteran squad won't be intimated at all by Christmas Break PBA.

Did that last game break Miles in what can be a positive way? In some regards this team is starting to look like the lost 2014-15 team who never could get their offense going and slugged unhappily the entire year. Can he see he's in this same loop? There are a lot of arm chair coaches with all the answers but to me what will Miles do vs what he should do is the question. It very well could involve a youth movement as losing sort of takes away the excuse of rookie mistakes costing you games. It could be a philosophy change as maybe this team starts shifting towards an offensive mindset. It could be nothing.

That Vegas won't drop a number should tell you something about the uncertainty of this game.

Prediction: Nebraska 84 - Southern 72 with a 93% chance of Runzas

Won it at the line. 3 fewer FGs, same # of 3s. Outrebounded. 13 turnovers. Fugly win against a horrible team. You'd have thought the other night would have been a wake-up call.
