I think that pretty much leaves Eddie Vedder, as far as the big singers from the Seattle-based grunge bands, doesn't it?

Yeah, that's pretty much what they are saying now. My first thought was that he relapsed, since he had an issue with pills in the early 2000s. Just ***** terrible.
Truly a shame. Quite possibly a return to touring was a bit too powerful.
Who knows? He was pretty open about fighting depression his whole life. It just seems strange that your band is still huge 33 years after they were founded, still selling out arenas, and you have a family, to take your life at 52. But only he knew the demons he had to deal with.
