Caleb Lightbourn Transferring

Best to transfer and get a new start even if it's at the next level down. Try to get another scholarship and finish school as it's unlikely he's going to be kicking in the NFL. I'm sure he tried hard to improve as no one wants to fail or let his teammates down. I wish him the best and sincerly hope things work out for the kid.

Wouldn't he have already finished school if he is a senior transfer? Maybe I don't understand that system correctly.

Good point... However I don't believe he's graduated so this should be his last year in school? Not sure when he's slated to graduate....

I'm certainly not down playing the event that occurred that forced him to start, that's extremely difficult. But let's be honest, he's kicking a ball as far as he can down field. Drew Brown, who actually was much closer to Foltz than only knowing him for a couple months, lost his holder, and has a more difficult job, managed to deal with the adversity just fine and actually got better each year.

I think we are both on the same page, it was time for both parties to move on. But his problems were 95% his, not outside factors.
It was kind of like being the guy who had to replace Tommy Frazier at QB ... everything you do is going to pale in comparison.

He does not have to graduate to transfer. He never redshirted so he can sit out a year with one more year to play (2020). The only benefit of a graduate transfer would be that he would not have to sit out 2019 and could play immediately. He would have to graduate to do that.

Interesting question, is any school willing to give him two years of scholarship?

Good luck to him. Kid has all the talent . . . just seems like he's the golfer who lost his swing or whatever and can't get it back.

So, one of the articles said his best year was when Diaco was here and had him on a strict schedule. Drills, drills, drills, I said a long time ago I thought he needed to go back to the basics. I think if he can find a school that has someone that works with the kickers/punters he might be alright. There is a lot of freedom these guys have at practice it might just be possible he needs some structure.

Just a thought.

I think he would be smart to get his degree first...

Brook Berringer seemed to do just fine and garnered all-conference honors. We then moved on to Scott Frost who brought us a national title and Eric Crouch who won the Heisman. If Lightbourn is asked why he is transferring and couldn't even start at Nebraska and responds "because Sam Foltz passed away in 2016 when I thought I was going to redshirt" he will be playing at Doane in 2019.

Wonder if Isaac Armstrong will get that scholly or was he already awarded one
Heavens I hope not. I hope the days of giving scholarships to punters and snappers are long gone.
The plan is to get Armstrong the scholarship for this fall, and go back to the days where you get a "free year" from a walk-on at the specialist position like we did with Alex Henery, Sam Foltz, etc. Then once they are starting put them on scholarship. Before LIghtbourn was let go, we actually were thinking we would have 2 punters on scholarship (you could make the case CL was kickoff specialist). I stated in a PM we were at 86 before the Green commitment, which means there's one more I wasn't quite sure of, so we had to start trimming fat to take his commitment publicly.

Watching LIghtbourn and Armstrong punt in practice was night/day. The problem is for every one that Lightbourn kicked the way he was capable, he kicked 5 about 20 yards.

I'm sure some of you know, but didn't we get a couple of walk-on commits from guys who could thump the ball pretty well? For some reason a kid from Lincoln comes to mind, and comments were made when he committed that he's got a good leg. All it takes is someone with some mental toughness and strong mechanics, and they could see the field. I'm not sold on Armstrong by a longshot.

The most respected trait of any kicker/punter is reliability. Whatever reason Lightbourn had for his performance in in his first year just doesn't hold water for what we've seen out of him recently. He's just not reliable.

Grant Detlefsen from Southeast.

We have four punters on the roster now. RSr Isaac Armstrong, RSr Jackson Walker, RFr William Przystup (Michigan St transfer), and Detlefsen.
