My guess of the top 14 on Saturday was pretty close-----except that Pittsburgh decided to lose a conference game to a middle of the road and unranked Duke squad in 4 sets on Sunday which resulted in Nebraska actually moving UP the polls to 8th, even though they split their matches this week. The voters graded Pitt on the “Your Conference SUCKS” curve and dropped the Panthers from 5th to 10th. I had to laugh a little reading an article on “The Numbers of Duke’s stunning upset of No. 5 Pittsburgh.” Inside they discuss that the SheDevils had 60 digs, which was a season high by an opponent against Pitt. Remember this is a 4 set match. Meanwhile Illinois had 102 digs and Nebraska had 99 in their 4 set match on Saturday. They play at an entirely different level in the B1G.

In the remainder of the top 10, BYU beat two crappy teams in their conference, but there is some slippage. Using the criteria of West Coast Conference Moral Victory (scoring 20 or more points in a set against the Cougars), both Portland and Gonzaga obtained 2 moral victories apiece, thrusting them in a 4 way tie in the Conference moral victory category. Both Portland and the Zags had losing records going into the match against the Latter Day Saints, so it wasn’t like BYU was playing the so-called “top of the line” in their pathetic conference. If will be interesting come NCAA tournament time whether BYU can turn it back on after playing less than mediocre competition for so long.

Stanford won both matches, beating the SoCal teams (USC & UCLA) on the road in straights. A couple of solid wins for The Color Cardinal. Creighton moved up a slot to 9th by winning two matches, including a 4 setter over 19th ranked Marquette. This essentially clinched the Big East title for the Blue Jays and probably a first weekend at home in the Tourney. The only other non B1G in the top ten was UT@SUCKS which won both matches moving up to 6th and expanded their lead in the Big 12 to two games as Kansas lost again.

The teams from the B1G in the top 10 reshuffled based on the weeks results. Minnesota & Wisconsin went on the road to the Michigan schools and both went 2- 0 over the weekend. The Wisconsin – Michigan match up went to 5 before the Badgers pulled it out. Illinois went 2-0 by adding a straight set victory over Maryland to their win over the Huskers. Nebraska and Penn State went 1 -1 with the Huskers losing to a top 4 team in 4 sets in a match that lasted over 2 ½ hours, and the Cultists losing to Purdue in 5 in Cultist Valley, after being up 2-0. Illinois now occupies the 4th slot, Wisconsin moves up to 5th, and the Lions drop to 7th.

For the other 2 B1G teams, Purdue winning twice (including the Penn State win) moved them up to 13th and Michigan only dropped 2 to 14th, even though they lost both matches, albeit to top 10 teams.

Cal Poly lost to Hawaii in the “Big West” conference removing them from the list of conference unbeatens, and again the voters applied the “Your Conference SUCKS” curve and dropped the Mustangs from 11 to 17. The SEC teams moved up two slots apiece with Florida at 11 and Kentucky at 12. The Gators and the Cats play each other this week on Halloween, the only time they play each other in conference play.

15 through 25 saw another PAC-12 casualty. Washington lost both matches for the 2nd straight weekend (0-4), this time to the Mountain Teams on the road and, right on cue, dropped out of the rankings to the RV section. No PAC-12 team replaced them, instead Northern Iowa (1st Missouri Valley team) and Tennessee (4th SEC team) entered the rankings tied at 25. USC split with the NoCal teams losing to Stanford, and stayed at 15. Oregon beat both Arizona teams on the road, but didn’t budge from 16. Washington State beat both Mountain teams and only moved up 1 to 18. USC, Oregon, and Washington State are tied for 2nd in the PAC-12 at 8-4. Arizona split with the Oregon teams and somehow moved up two slots to 21, and UCLA lost to both The Color Cardinal AND the Cal Bears to drop 2 slots to 22 and becomes the next PAC-12 candidate to leave the top 25.

Rounding it out, Central Florida moved up 3 slots to 22. The AAC is a one pony race since Wichita State is down this year. Missouri beat LSU and aTm (in 5) to move up to 20. And finally, Louisville, like Pitt, was upset on Sunday in the ACC to Syracuse and dropped to 24.

The B1G has 7 teams in the top 14 and 5 of the top 8 teams. The PAC-12 lost another team and is now down to 6 in the top 25 with 5 teams in the 15 to 25 range. The SEC now suddenly has 4 teams in the top 25 after having only 2 representatives for months. The Big East and ACC have 2 teams apiece in the rankings. No other conference has more than 1 rep.

After reviewing the RPI rankings, I renew my contention to have it scrapped. I would rather they use the Pablo rankings or RichKern poll. Even PrepVolleyball has a top 64 (meaning their take on the 64 teams to make the tourney) that is more in line with reality than the RPI.

We went 1-1 and moved up a spot? We need to keep losing.
Actually, if you think of it......................we need to lose every other game!! ;)

I've known the B1G has dominated in women's volleyball, but 5 of the top 8? 7 of the top 14? Is that some kind of record?
