This weeks movers –n- shakers . . .

*Another game, another 300 plus total yard performance from Adrian Martinez. Another solid performance however, Martinez still went through an ice cold stretch in the first half and two of his turnovers were killers (his third was a fourth down hail mary). There is still so much more out there for AM. Perhaps more importantly, eight different receivers with catches—7 with two or more.

*Devine Ozigbo with another stellar performance. 22 carries for 159 yards and 2 TDs. He also chipped in 4 receptions for 33 yards. With a Bowl Game all but eliminated, we are now at the half way point of the season and Ziggy sits at 448 yards. With Bell out of the picture, could Ozigbo end the Huskers 1,000 yard rusher drought?

*Maurice Washington with his first of very likely many, many touchdowns. His first touchdown was vintage Washington scoring with a move that no other RB on our roster could probably execute. After a breakout performance against Wisconsin, Washington followed with another solid outing—if not quite as spectacular.

*This wasn’t the Morgan-Spileman show at WR this week. Whereas Spielman had solid numbers—8 catches, 76 yards, 1 TD—Morgan had only 2 catches for 31 yards. It was nice to see Williams with 3 catches getting involved. Kade Warner and Bryan Reimers also accounted for 3 catches between them. The attempted pass to Jaron Woodyard might have been his first TD if Martinez hadn’t underthrown him for an interception. Spielman now sits at 537 at the halfway point. Our first 1,000 yard reciever?

*Jack Stoll with three catches at TE to give him 10 for the season. He is also over 100 yards with 116. Would have liked to have seen a designed TE rollout kind of play when we were trying to run out the clock.

*Statistics can be deceiving. I have read that we “lost” the turnover battle again. True, the official total was 3-2 however, the pass into the end zone on fourth down in overtime was a desperation play to give ourselves at an outside chance after the botched snap. In reality, it was going to be a turnover on downs. Kind of like when tackling somebody in the backfield on fourth down and they fumble.

*Don’t look now but J.D. Spielman was credited for a 19 yard punt return—in spite of the holding call. That return just ballooned the punt return yardage numbers for the season from 4 to 23. We may need to check for nose bleeds.

*On defense, Luke Gifford, Dedrick Young, Mo Barry, and Lamar Jackson graded very highly. For Young and Jackson, this might have been their best games as Huskers. They both recorded two pass breakups. Young in particular was effective in pass coverage and helped lead to an interception. Luke Gifford had a 10 yard sack, and 4 TFL’s. He recovered the onside kick for good measure. Unfortunately, Aaron Williams and DiCaprio Bootle had perhaps their worst games as Huskers—especially Williams who played the nickel and was targeted 11 times and gave up 11 catches. The Huskers generally went with a 3-3-5 look and Williams struggled. Meanwhile, Bootle hasn’t looked like himself since he missed the final three drives of the first half against Wisconsin. I wonder if he isn’t nursing an injury.

*Tre Neal with his first interception as a Husker and gave the Huskers their first turnover return yards of the season—14. Antonio Reed with an interception (his first of the year) and a near miss later in the game.

*Collin Miller with a nice 7 yard tackle for loss.

*Nine penalties for 89 yards. 1 penalty for 5 yards. Nuff said.

*Third and fourth down woes are getting ridiculous. Fourth down alone: NU 1-10 and opponents 6-9. And once again, it isn’t just the conversion rate but the distance of the conversions and failures. In spite of what the coaches are saying, we aren’t making short yardage and the opponents make long conversions almost at will. We failed on a third and one and a fourth and one late in the game, NW converted two fourth and 10s on their final drive. There’s your ball game.

*Each member of the starting offensive line played all 84 snaps on Saturday.

*Isaac Armstrong has given our woeful special teams a boost but we haven’t taken advantage. In the last 6 quarters, Armstrong has pinned the opposing team inside their 20 three times. The other team has scored in dramatic fashion on two of those drives.

When was the last time we had a QB have a completion rate above 60% in a season? You have to think Adrian has the potential over his career at Nebraska to top 65% on an annual basis as he grows into the position

Ziggy with 6 games left has a legitimate shot at a 1,000 yard season.

JD has a real shot at 1,000 receiving yards too

Could I ask a favor:
Could you give us a breakdown of "big plays" in the run game and pass game both by DONU and by opponents?

I am thinking we are doing way better than in past years, but I would love to see some data.

Thanks again for all you do :)
