2018 Nebraska Women's Soccer Midseason Update

Undertow

Inactive as of 11-01-2018
Wanted to get this out before the Cult that IS Penn State match, but didn’t make it. Instead the Huskers added to their B1G conference lead by punking the 24th ranked Blue & White AT Cultist Valley, 1 to nil. Goalkeeper Aubrei Corder had statistically her best match of her career with 9 saves while pitching the shutout. Savanah Uveges got the only goal for the Huskers on a penalty kick midway through the first half, then Big Red made the one goal stand up to win the match.

To review, Nebraska was unranked nationally and picked eighth in the B1G by the coaches in the preseason. Eighth in conference is good enough to make the B1G tournament, but unless you win out to get the automatic bid, eighth is unlikely to get you to the NCAA’s.

Non-conference results were mildly successful with a record of 4-3-1. The Huskers lost to Washington State (currently ranked 9) and Duke (currently ranked 16), but beat Oregon (Receiving Votes) and upset NC State in Raleigh. The Wolfpack are ranked 21. The one match in non-conference which didn’t make any sense was the 6-0 drubbing by Baylor in Waco. All the other losses were within 1 or 2 goals, except for the Bear debacle. Note that Baylor fiasco was the only match where the Huskers played at home on a Friday, had to travel on Saturday, then played on Sunday evening. It is difficult to say that travel and a short turnaround was the cause; the reality is that the result is largely inexplicable.

Conference play began with overtime games in Rutgers and Maryland resulting in a tie and win respectively. But the third match of conference play saw a dramatic come from behind (as in 3 to 1 down late in the 2nd half) overtime victory over Indiana. The finally tally was 4 to 3 Big Red with Faith Carter delivering the goods by scoring a hat trick on the night including the game winner in overtime. The next two conference games saw 1 to 0 shutouts of Purdue and the aforementioned Penn State.

With seven conference games remaining, Nebraska leads the B1G standings with 13 points and a 4-0-1 record (3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie). Ohio State is next for the Huskers, and without Friday’s results being tallied, the Buckeyes currently stand in 2nd place with 9 points. Ironically, neither tOSU or Big Red is ranked in this week’s top 25 (Nebraska is a least receiving votes). Only 3 teams from the B1G are currently ranked (Northwestern at 17, Wisconsin at 22, and The Cult at 24). Nebraska does not face Northwestern in the regular season, but does face Wisconsin in Madison in the next to last regular season match. The victory over the Cultists was BIGLEY.

Faith Carter and Savanah Uveges lead the B1G in scoring with 5 goals in 4 matches. Faith Carter (Offense), Aubrei Corder (Goalkeeper), and Simone Miramontez (Defense) have all been recognized by the Conference in one of their weekly B1G awards. Corder is steadily moving up the Nebraska All-Time Lists in Games Started, Minutes Played, Saves, Shutouts, and Wins. By the end of her career (she is a junior) she will be top 2 or 3 in all the aforementioned categories.

IF this current crop of Huskers continues to surprise, they should get a top 4 seed in conference and an NCAA Tourney bid. It is also not outside the realm of possibility that Nebraska, currently with an RPI of 18, may host 2 matches in the NCAA’s at Hibner Stadium. The RPI is still the main tool used by the soccer selection committee. Regardless, an NCAA Tournament berth would have to be considered a major success for this year’s team.

Lady Huskers remain the fav NU team in our house. Disappointing result against IA, still counting on Sinclair, Caroline, Brenna, Savannah, Mikela, Aubrey and the team to power through the rest of the of the season.

My daughter passed on a tourney the weekend of 10/27 planning for the lady Huskers getting a home game in the B1G tourney.

I don't care if it's tiddlywinks, a win over tOSU is sweet.

NU-tOSU tied going to NU"s last penalty kick. NU player kicked it, goalie guessed correctly, and deflected it into the pole on the R side, but it deflected just barely back into goal.

NU beat tOSU in Columbus.
