Proposed Targeting Rule Update

Could be I'm not watching enough games, but I agree with GFOA that it is sorting itself out pretty well. I do think, hoever, that the calls are becoming regional, and that when officlas from one conference officiate games with a team from another conference, there often is some unhappiness with the calls because "that's not the way we do it." I do't know what can be done about that since it is true with respect to other fouls (PI, e.g.)

I think it will be fine the way it is, but once a year or two pass after this possible rule chane and it will be OI then too. Change does create some confusion in itself.

Some of the clear tgeting actions are so severe that ejection from one game is not enough for them.
 

Mention has been made about when the ball carrier ducks his head. Why does it seem targeting only applies to the defender?

Agree,and one that chaps my a$$ is when a rb or wr stiff arms a defensive player in the face mask it is okay?Not trying to highjack the post. I ‘m done venting,thank you.

I don't know about CFB, but in the NFL Zeke Elliott was the only offensive player called for targeting this year. Interestingly enough, Clete Blakeman was the ref in that game. He and another official on his crew both threw flags.

I have seen a flag for hands to the face on plays like that. It's very rare though. I think officials sometimes get into the, likely unintentional, "habit" of associating certain penalties with specific position groups. With hands to the face, most of the time it's called on OL or DL.
 
Both those hits from Gerry in my view were just good football hits. Even in the first one it looks like the shoulder hits as the player is going down not his fault. The targeting rule I get it is needed but even with the new changes I fear the tier 1 will be the new call to make all the time.
 
I think 15 yds is too excessive. 10 yds.

I think intent should be defined as launching, and/or lowering the helmet to hit with the crown.

For God’s sake, I don’t want to see players get injured. On the other hand, I don’t watch to see them play patty-cake blocking, or give the ball carrier a hug and escort him OOB.

In the first one, it’s such a bang-bang play, that unless Gerry throws himself at the guys ankles, he’s going to hit what the receiver is leading with....his HELMET.
 
If this rule gets passed, I think the standard should be, "Assume Targeting 2 unless it's obviously Targeting 1."

That sort of works opposite to the American justice system of innocent until proven guilty, but under the current system all targeting is assumed to be "bad targeting." If there's any doubt, than eject the player.

But there are a lot of cases where the defender is already mid-tackle and the ball carrier twists or turns into an awkward position. That's nobody's fault. Those cases are also pretty clear.
 
Will they be calling helmet to helmet hits between OL and DL? Cuz that happens every play. Or is it only when the opposing players get a run at each other?

I don't think either of those penalties on Gerry from 2/3 years ago would have been called this year. Any recent examples that are ticking folks off? Other than trying to get ref's to consider a defensive player as "defenseless" against a running back?

One "tell" of intent is what the defender is doing with his arms. If they are pulled in to the sides with fists in front of his chest, they are supporting their neck for known helmet-first contact. If the arms are outside the body, ready to wrap up, the guy is looking to make a tackle. No one in their right mind is going to go in hard, head-first without bracing themselves, unless they hate being able to walk.

Not having your arms ready-to-wrap-up isn't necessarily intent to target as sometimes there isnn't anything to wrap around and/or you are protecting your own body, like the Gerry Iowa ejection.

Why are you limiting it to a "defenseless" player, when the rule itself is not limited to a "defenseless" player?
