Heisman snubs

Not listed in the link, but folks around here think Peyton Manning got jobbed in '97 as the runner-up ... only 3819 passing yards & 36 TDs with 3 more rushing.

The author says...

Seriously, No. 1 Nebraska played No. 2 Florida in the Fiesta Bowl that season and beat it by 38 points. The Huskers won all their games by an average of 38.7 points. They don't do that without Frazier!

Well, they also couldn't have done that without the 27 players on that team that went on to play in the NFL.

I am thinking that if Brook Berringer had been our starter in 1995, the results would have been very similar. I suppose one could say the same thing about QBs named Gill, Frost, Crouch, Gdowski, Lord, and even Clete Blakeman.

How much Heisman hype does TF get if he is running the option for Air Force, Army or Georgia Tech?

Defense wins championships

Don't disagree that Frazier wasn't the only Nebraska quarterback who could have won a NC with that team, but he was a difference maker as a leader and playmaker. What would he have done at Air Force? It's hard to say, but I doubt he plays four years without winning a Mountain West title or two. He was that kind of player.

As to the defense, defense does win championships and that year was one of the best playmaking defenses I can remember, but that team scored almost at will and that changes everything. Once an opponent went down by two scores, the crap canned their game plan and panicked making the defenses job that much easier.

Yeah, Tommie Frazier had better offers than Air Force, Army, and Georgia Tech, soooo.... he didn’t need to run the option there. It’s a moot hypothetical that means nothing.

College football history is littered with great QBs who won championships because of their team. Tommie won his with the team and was an electric playmaker for NU.

Trying to diminish the accomplishments of a guy who won the MVP of 3 National championship games. SMH

Pumphrey was the best back in the country last year.

I remember reading back in the day Mike Price from Washington St. was mailing a single leaf in a envelope to all the Heisman voters to promote Ryan Leaf.... he ended up 3rd behind Woodson and Manning but he had no business being on the damn ballot. It's a popularity contest, put enough lipstick on the pig and someone will love it.

TF was a great QB for DONU. But Nebraska could not compete with the Florida schools until TO took Bobby Bowden's advice and started putting more speed on defense. TF was the beneficiary.

Florida State only scored 16 on us in the 1994 Orange Bowl...and they had Heisman winner Charlie Ward at the helm. Our defense held Miami to 17 the next year and stopped Florida's fun and gun offense the year after that. Our TF-led offense only scored 15 points in the 1993 NC game and only 24 in the 1994 NC game. When we won the NC in 1994 wasn't it our FB, not TF, who scored 2 TDs? It was our defense as much as our offense that enabled us to compete for NCs those 2 years.

But Gerry Gdowski was not as fortunate. Florida State scored 41 on Nebraska to conclude the 1989 season. There is nothing Gdowski could do about that.

Frazier = GOAT

Statistically Gerry Gdowski's senior year at DONU was just as impressive as Tommy Frazier's senior year... you know, TF's 1995 "Heisman snub" year.

Let's compare TF in 95 and GG in 1989

Completion % - TF 56.4 - GG 52.2....TF wins

Average Yards per passing attempt - TF 8.4 - GG 9.8....GG wins

Passing TDs - TF 17 - GG 19....GG wins

Interceptions - TF 4 - GG 2....GG wins

Passer Rating - TF 156.1 - GG 177.3...GG wins

Total rushing yards - TF 604 - GG 925....GG wins

Average rushing yards per attempt - TF 6.2 - GG 7.9....GG wins

GG beats TF in 6 of 7 statistical categories. Doesn't that make GG the true GOAT? Shouldn't Gdowski be on this Heisman snub list as well?

I am not trying to diminish TF's 1995 season. I am trying to put it in perspective. When the author said that the 1995 NU season could not have happened without TF, I took exception to it. I think it could have happened with a significant number of other QBs running the show. That 1995 team probably would have the NC with Fred Duda or Mickey Joseph at the controls.
