Nebraska's special teams could be among the best not just in the Big Ten, but in the nation.
Special teams inconsistencies in 2015 and 2016 left Mike Riley with little choice. He severed ties with his longtime special teams coordinator, Bruce Read. Was a change really needed? You tell me. At the end of the regular season, Nebraska ranked 127 out of 128 teams in the FBS in net punting. But it wasn't just problems at punter. The Huskers ranked 90th in kick coverage, 106th in punt coverage, and 73rd in punt return average. Last year, Nebraska allowed five punt...

Calling out an OWH columnist for trying to make 2+2=5
Last year, Omaha World-Herald columnist Lee Barfknecht opined about how a "lack of toughness" within the program and athletic department was responsible for holding Nebraska back.

Instead, it was little more than a platform for Lee to go through his big list of grievances about Shawn Eichorst, Mike Riley, and 'kids these days.'

I had some fun taking Lee to task for some of his curious takes and flimsy logic,...

Even without Chris Jones, this could still be one of the Big Ten’s best secondaries.
Heading into spring ball, coaches probably expected to have one of the best secondaries in the Big Ten. They were supposed to have arguably the best cover corner in the conference, Chris Jones, blanketing receivers every week. They also had an up and coming sophomore, JoJo Domann, enjoying a strong start to spring practice and pushing the two guys in front of him. Domann had worked his way to No. 3 safety before tearing his left ACL in April. Then Jones...

Thoughts as a new season is about to begin
Can you believe it? Game week is upon us and not a moment too soon. So here goes another edition of "Husker Dan's Big Red Notebook."

    RILEY'S 200th WIN?

Saturday night will mark Mike Riley's 200th game as a college head coach. And If the Huskers win, it could be said Riley won his 200th game. But with the win, it would actually be Coach Riley's 109th win. Confusing? Not really, but the 200 milestone is nice to hear, no? "Riley won his 200th career game." Hmmm.

    NUMBER...

Huskers are deep in the middle, but questions surround the "Cat" position.
Linebackers coach Trent Bray is a rising star in the coaching profession. This past offseason, he was offered the defensive coordinator position at San Jose State. He turned the opportunity down, in part, to coach under new Husker defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. Bray would like to gain knowledge of the 3-4 "No Crease" system employed by Diaco and add it to his extensive playing and coaching experience with the 4-3 "Cover 4" scheme of Mark Banker. In return for his...

Everything you might have missed this offseason
Hello again! Real, live football is almost back - and there is a lot to discuss on what should be a pivotal season for the Huskers. But before we move forward, let's take a quick look back at some noteworthy things you may have missed during the offseason.

Adidas channels their inner Makovicka for the annual alternate uniform.

Since Nebraska and Adidas have been producing alternate uniforms, I've been posting a head to toe critique of the latest abomination to be spawned from the...

Not very deep, but Nebraska should have a nice four or five man rotation.
Switching to a three-man front, the first order of business was determining where guys recruited to a 4-3 system fit. The team isn't terribly deep, and they're pretty young at key spots, but they feel pretty good about their starting threesome. Those guys have played in a lot of games and have made a seamless transition to the new system. Arguably the most important position in a 3-4 scheme is the nose guard. Junior Mick Stoltenberg has looked very good in camp...

Nebraska needs the O-line to play up to its potential
For Nebraska to have any chance of capturing the Big Ten West Division, offensive line play will have to improve markedly over last season. The Huskers want so badly to be a physical line of scrimmage program like Wisconsin and Iowa, but they still aren't there. The unit returns five guys who started at least four games last season, and Mike Cavanaugh has recruited well. Is Nebraska ready to restore the pipeline tradition? Fans have been waiting over 15-years for that....

Depth will be a concern, but Nebraska's starters should be among the best in the Big Ten.
Two of the positions most impacted by the graduations of last year's senior class were the wide receivers and tight ends. Nebraska loses more than 52 percent of its total receptions from 2016. In fact, six of the Huskers' top eight receivers from last season have moved on. That means coaches will be relying on a number of new faces to step up and emerge as reliable options in the passing game this season.

Nebraska has been snakebitten at the receiver position the last...

Still waiting for a workhorse back to emerge
A lot has been made about Mike Riley needing to find a true pocket-passer to run his offense. It seems Nebraska finally has a room full of guys to work with now and in the foreseeable future. The thing that gets overlooked, however, is that this team also needs to find a workhorse at running back too. A true pro-style offense - like the one Riley and Langsdorf intend to run - needs a dynamic talent in the backfield for it to truly be potent. Does Nebraska have that guy...
