    Recap of the Illinois game
What a difference a year makes.

A year ago, after (what was then) the ugliest and most painful loss of the 2015 season, I wrote this*. Rereading it brings back all of the struggles and difficulties Nebraska was facing a year ago: highly questionable play calling, horrible game and clock management, not utilizing talent correctly, abandoning the run, players with horrible attitudes, a secondary that...

Diaco’s energy, healthy offensive line, launch of QB competition are highlights
It seemed like the first day of summer vacation. It was Day One of Nebraska football spring drills, a movable feast day on the Old Cornhusker Fan Almanac calendar. With the kickoff of fall season still six months away, it was a moment in time to relish.

In his on-field coaching debut as NU’s defensive coordinator, Bob Diaco unleashed his high-energy style on the Blackshirts. The early returns were encouraging. Diaco exuded intensity and set the tone for the day. Mike Riley certainly liked...

Any scheme requires winning one-on-ones to make it work
The arrival of Bob Diaco and his switch to a 3-4 defense has brought much anticipation to Husker Nation. It will bring many questions long before the first game this fall, but for me, one tops them all.

Will it generate an effective pass rush? In my opinion, that’s the most important step to creating a disruptive, turnover-causing defense. The Huskers created only 19 takeaways last fall, which ranked 67th among all major-college teams. That included 16 interceptions, which were mainly due...

A look at the Music City Bowl and NU's chances
Okay, Husker fans. It is bowl time for the Big Red. And this year, unlike last year, the Huskers didn't have to back into a bowl game. Nope. This year, the 9-3 Huskers get to play Tennessee in the Music City Bowl in beautiful Nashville, TN.

Had the Huskers not been embarrassed at Iowa last month, Nebraska might be the team playing Florida in the Outback Bowl in sunny and warm Tampa, Florida instead of Iowa.

The Huskers will be making their first visit to the Music City Bowl...

Preview of the Huskers' 2016 season
I saw a T-shirt for sale at a local (Omaha) Husker apparel shop that said "Make Nebraska Great Again."

Maybe Riley and his staff can one day restore the golden years ('90s) of Husker football, but it won't likely happen this year.

For now, let's take a peek at what the Huskers are going to look like in Year 2 of the "Mike Riley Experiment."

    1.) Quarterback (C+)
Tommy Armstrong returns for his senior year with 33 career starts under his belt. But despite that, I'm thinking...

Senior QB overcomes ankle injury to lead game-winning 91-yard fourth-quarter touchdown drive
You’ve complained about him on and off for four years now, but you’ll miss the Warrior when he’s gone. Thirty times, he has left the field a winner.

No. 30 did not come easily, but when Tommy Armstrong Jr. walked slowly, painfully, off the field at Memorial Stadium field, he trailed only Eric Crouch (35 wins) and Tommie Frazier (33) for most victories by a Nebraska quarterback.

Armstrong won’t play quarterback in the NFL, but he leaves everything on the field for the University of...

    Recapping Nebraska's 2016 season opener
I don't know if the Guinness folks track it or not, but I would wager Nebraska set a record for largest attendance at celebration-of-life ceremony. Sure, some of the 90,013 in the stands may have said they were there for a football game, but Saturday night was dedicated to the memory of Sam Foltz, a beloved native son, team leader, and future NFL punter whose live was tragically cut short this summer.

If you believe a person's spirit can be seen and felt after they...

Biackshirts shine, o-line struggles as NU prepares for Wisconsin showdown
For Nebraska football, victories in October have been a precious commodity over the past decade. So for that reason alone, Nebraska’s unconvincing 27-14 win over a weak Purdue team is nothing to sneer at.

But I can’t deny it. This thought crossed my mind more than once as Nebraska’s beat-up offensive line kept misfiring its way throughout a gorgeous autumn afternoon in Lincoln: “Is this really an undefeated, Top-Ten team?”

For one more week, it certainly is. The Cornhuskers had just enough...

With a department dedicated towards recruiting in the works, the staff turns its attention to 2018.
Mike Riley has spent his first three years one upping himself on the recruiting trail. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, the Huskers have finished with the 30th, 24th and 23rd ranked classes during Riley's tenure. The 2015 class, underrated in my opinion, was a transition class compiled in just over 8 weeks - with over half of that time falling under the NCAA mandated Dead Period. The improvements and strides made on the trail have been impressive during...
