US Women's Soccer star Alex Morgan in SI Swimsuit Issue

as a parent of a 9 year old daughter that is a big fan of Alex Morgan - I'm with HS04 and RR on this one.

Plus, as a counterpoint to Bilsker, women's sports has the same element of competition as the men. The individual strength and athleticism may not match the men; but, the competition is as compelling as any men's game.

What about Beckham posing as a Men's underwear model? Would you chastise him for this? I am not saying that making any athlete a sex symbol does the sport any good, but male soccer players have been doing this long before Brandi Chastain took off her shirt and slid on her knees in her sports bra....let alone this.

Actually yeah I would. Which is why I made fun of all of my friends for becoming Beckham fanatics when he moved to the MLS.Especially my female friends. His career has gone down hill since he started being a model and quit being 100% focused on soccer in my opinion.

Also, there is a HUGE difference between what Brandi did and what Alex did. One was a celebration of winning the World Cup and the other one was a planned idea to make money.

I don't have a problem with it. Maybe if I had a daughter I'd feel differently. I would maybe have a problem with it, if the whole team did something like this as a cheap promotion to get folks watching women's soccer, but Morgan's posing in the Swimsuit Issue, hardly some cheap promotion. She's an adult, and I'm sure wants to help promote her sport, and promote herself as well.
Do you have a problem with what the German WWC team did this past summer? And her doing this didn't promote her sport, it just fueled opinions like the one Bilsker has. That women's sports aren't worth watching unless there is a hot athlete.

Man, you guys are great...

High five to Alex for jumping on an opportunity to appear in one of the worlds premier sports magazines, read by 20+ million people a week, in one of the iconic issues in the magazine world.....

If you don't think this will draw a few more fans or viewers to women's soccer, you're crazy....And who cares what the intent of watching the game is? You think all those wives around the country that watch football games, are tuning in to watch the game or to look at a bunch of football players butts? And people aren't complaining about that...

You want people to start looking at women athletes in the same light as men athletes, quit making such a big dang deal of a stud woman athlete doing the same thing the men athletes are doing...

Our country is so prude about stupid stuff

Draw more fans to women's soccer doing this?.....don't count on it.....the WPS just suspended the upcoming club season for 2012.....

And who cares what the intent of watching the game is?

I do....then again I'm not a sexist nor watch woman's sports for that reason....but thats just me....I'd prefer the game oto be sold that way....it won't build lasting fans and allot of younger girls get turned off by it.....

It has nothing to be with being prude.....it sexist and thats pretty much what you are trying to sell the women's game on based on what you just wrote...sterotypical stuff....we are not all like that.....

Its not stupid stuff.....

She's a grown woman, posing in a magazine that I'm guessing young girls aren't in a hurry to purchase. Hope Solo posed in ESPN the Mag's Skin issue. Where was the outrage over that?

So a chick posing in a swimsuit/body paint in Sports illustrated is sexist? Someone may want to inform them about that....

And I didn't infer to sell the game based solely on sex, but it sure doesn't hurt to supplement the puny viewership....The same way Finch helped with softball, the same way Kournikova, Sharipova, and the Williams sisters helped with tennis, those women used their marketability hand in hand with their athletic ability to help sell their sports.....And there's a heck of a lot more people watching because of it, than without it

Good lord, its not like she did a porn, or posed in Hustler or something....it's a pretty cool picture, in one of the biggest magazines on earth

I think what RR thought was sexist was your comment about not caring what the intent of people watching the game is. And this won't help boost WPS television numbers and it won't help boost the WNT numbers because the vast majority of those games are not on basic cable. My original point was and always will be that this doesn't help women's sports. I have no problem with Alex for doing what she did.... I just think this is one of the things that damages women's sports more than men's sports imo.

Truth of the matter is, most men just don't care about women's sports (irregardless of how good you think they are/aren't).....And most women just aren't into sports like the men are....They arent going to fill up 3/4+ of a stadium, they arent going to fill up a bar on gameday (yes some go, and just as many are there to socialize as they are to watch the game), they aren't crazy into fantasy sports.....

So how do you try and market something (a sport) to a demographic that's already into sports and already understands sports but doesn't care about that particular one? You take the top athletes and you market them to the best of their marketability.....Abby Wambach just isnt that marketable.....Amazing soccer player, one of the best ever for the US, but she isn't going to draw new people that don't care about women's sports....Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, also top players, but they have marketability.....Why? Because they are pretty dang good looking women.....

It is what it is.....Professional and International sports are a business.....They are driven by money....If the sport doesn't make money, it doesn't survive on that level.....When the marketing for those sports isnt working because people don't care they are the best in the world (or that league), you either do the next best thing to market, which in this case is their looks, or you keep going on losing money, folding leagues and having no hope for expanding your business

Don't forget about Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. How many people did those two get to watch Olympic Sand Volleyball? I'm sure people watched because they were wearing white bikini's, but I'm sure people also watched because they were really good.

Your use of the word 'Chick'....says it all.....why don't you go and pitch this to the ladies who post on HM....nuff said....

And yeah what you said was sterotypical and sexist...plain and simple...

We agree on this friend....

Nuff said on this subject...I have better things to discuss...:) Like how soon do we fire Klinsman...;).

Its the same thing in the entertainment industry....Why are Brad Pitt, and George Clooney, and guys like that the biggest actors in the world? Cause women think they are sexy and will go see their movies no matter how bad they suck.....And vice versa for women actresses.....It's no coincidence that some of the top actresses are also some of the best looking.....So is the whole entertainment industry sexist?
