Iowa, and their BS Non-Conference Scheduling

Cup cakes? Long time since any team played us like they were cupcakes. They all have our game circled, and come in expecting to go home with a win.

That's the mind set we have to deal with, because that is our recent reality.

Pal, you don’t have to state the obvious.

We aren't pals, chippah.

We pretty much follow the same model- 1 P5, 2 cupcakes.
Oklahoma, Georgia Southern, NoDak
Fordham, Buffalo, Oklahoma
South Alabama, Colorado, Northern Illinois
Colorado, Troy, Bethune-Cookman
Arkansas St, Oregon, Northern Illinois

Those aren't exactly meat grinder non-conference schedules. Our P5 opponents are a bit better overall, but lets not pretend CU was a juggernaut.

Even with their "cupcake" schedule, the turd birds have beaten Frost every year so who else they played prior to that doesn't really matter.
But the one P5 game they’ve played has arguably been much poorer than those NU has played.

Pitt, Arizona, ASU … does not compare to OU, Oregon, USC, Washington …

It goes back to the 9 game conference schedule. If you only have three non conference games, the reasons for not scheduling a P5 game are strong. If you have 8 conference games, schedule an interesting P5 game. I wish the B1G would move to an 8 game conference schedule but apparently it is not going to happen.

Agreed - the issue with a tough non-con in the B10 is that you already have 9 games in a tough conference and depending on the conference scheduling you can end up with a brutal schedule without even scheduling a P5 non-conference team

Holy crap, they're as bad as KState scheduling a bunch of MAC and FCS teams. Not counting the annual CyHawk Game with ISU, Iowa has played just six different Power 5* teams over the last TWENTY-FIVE years (a total of 13 games). What a bunch of cupcake fakers.
  • 2015 - Pitt (ACC)
  • 2014 - Pitt (ACC)
  • 2010 - Arizona (PAC)
  • 2009 - Arizona (PAC)
  • 2008 - Pitt (Big East)
  • 2007 - Syracuse (Big East)
  • 2006 - Syracuse (Big East)
  • 2004 - Arizona State (PAC)
  • 2003 - Arizona State (PAC)
  • 2000 - KState, Nebraska (Big XII)
  • 1999 - Nebraska (Big XII)
  • 1998 - Arizona (PAC)
*Asterisk for "Power 5" because most all of these games pre-date the concept of P5. Depending on how you feel about Pitt/Syracuse in the Big East days, you could drop this number lower.
I have been saying this for a long time. Not only that they lost to two D2 schools. Now look at their conference schedules. They have long pined to not face anyone. They had pre-Nebraska rivals. Wisconsin was a really big rival for them. When NU joined the B1G you were able to keep 1 cross division rival. Instead of choosing Wisconsin, they chose Indiana. What a joke.

This all day

All of a sudden NUs non conf games are too tough

Iowa plays Wisc every year

I don’t think the scheduling philosophy for either team is necessarily about “cupcakes” as much as it is about getting more OOC home games and the accompanying revenue. But teams in Major conferences won’t easily give up home dates. It’s only the money-poor lower conference teams and the bottom of those conferences that are willing to sign contracts for road games with no returning home game.

It’s another reason the fictional “Agreement” between the Big 10, ACC and P12 was always just pretend. When you don’t sign contracts, you don’t have any agreement in matters like this.

Wisconsin is as bad if not worse with their non conference scheduling … rarely playing a significant P5 opponent.

Maybe NU needs to follow suit until their performance warrants tougher scheduling.

Wisconsin is ahead of Iowa when it comes to non-conference schedules. I'm not sure that Nebraska's non-conference schedule has been (or will be) that much more difficult. We do occasionally have a quality OOC opponent, but not always. 2023 and 2024, our only P5 opponent is Colorado (a dreadful program with one winning season over the past 16 years). Yes, we get teams like Tennessee further down the road. But that's not any better than Wisconsin.

Wisconsin schedules...

2021: Notre Dame, (Army, 9 wins)
2020: Notre Dame (cancelled, Covid)
(2016: LSU)
(2015: Alabama)

2024-2025: Alabama
2026: Notre Dame, (Pitt)
2028: Utah
2029: UCLA

Iowa doesn't have any non-conference opponents near what Wisconsin does -- even looking forward the next several years. Iowa literally does not have a P5 team scheduled other than their rival, Iowa State. Wisconsin has a legitimate P5 opponent (or greater) on their schedule more years than not.

Iowa's future schedules...

2022: Iowa State, Nevada, South Dakota State
2023: Iowa State, Utah State, Western Michigan
2024: Iowa State, Illinois State, Troy
2025: Iowa State, Florida Atlantic, UMass
2026: Northern Illinois
2027: Ball State

Future schedules may favor Wisconsin but their previous scheduling philosophy has been putrid. Non-conference during Paul Chryst era:

2021 - E. Michigan, Notre Dame, Army
2019 - So. Florida, C. Michigan, Kent State
2018 - W. Kentucky, New Mexico, BYU
2017 - Utah St, Florida Atlantic, BYU
2016 - LSU, Akron, Georgia St
2015 - Alabama, Miami OH, Troy, Hawaii

The scheduling prior to the Paul Chryst era ESPECIALLY during the Alvarez years was even worse.

In six years above they’ve played 3 P5 schools.
