Iowa, and their BS Non-Conference Scheduling

Cup cakes? Long time since any team played us like they were cupcakes. They all have our game circled, and come in expecting to go home with a win.

That's the mind set we have to deal with, because that is our recent reality.

But the one P5 game they’ve played has arguably been much poorer than those NU has played.

Pitt, Arizona, ASU … does not compare to OU, Oregon, USC, Washington …

Agreed - the issue with a tough non-con in the B10 is that you already have 9 games in a tough conference and depending on the conference scheduling you can end up with a brutal schedule without even scheduling a P5 non-conference team

I have been saying this for a long time. Not only that they lost to two D2 schools. Now look at their conference schedules. They have long pined to not face anyone. They had pre-Nebraska rivals. Wisconsin was a really big rival for them. When NU joined the B1G you were able to keep 1 cross division rival. Instead of choosing Wisconsin, they chose Indiana. What a joke.

I don’t think the scheduling philosophy for either team is necessarily about “cupcakes” as much as it is about getting more OOC home games and the accompanying revenue. But teams in Major conferences won’t easily give up home dates. It’s only the money-poor lower conference teams and the bottom of those conferences that are willing to sign contracts for road games with no returning home game.

It’s another reason the fictional “Agreement” between the Big 10, ACC and P12 was always just pretend. When you don’t sign contracts, you don’t have any agreement in matters like this.

Wisconsin is ahead of Iowa when it comes to non-conference schedules. I'm not sure that Nebraska's non-conference schedule has been (or will be) that much more difficult. We do occasionally have a quality OOC opponent, but not always. 2023 and 2024, our only P5 opponent is Colorado (a dreadful program with one winning season over the past 16 years). Yes, we get teams like Tennessee further down the road. But that's not any better than Wisconsin.

2021: Notre Dame, (Army, 9 wins)
2020: Notre Dame (cancelled, Covid)
(2016: LSU)
(2015: Alabama)

2024-2025: Alabama
2026: Notre Dame, (Pitt)
2028: Utah

Iowa doesn't have any non-conference opponents near what Wisconsin does -- even looking forward the next several years. Iowa literally does not have a P5 team scheduled other than their rival, Iowa State. Wisconsin has a legitimate P5 opponent (or greater) on their schedule more years than not.

Future schedules may favor Wisconsin but their previous scheduling philosophy has been putrid. Non-conference during Paul Chryst era:

2017 - Utah St, Florida Atlantic, BYU

The scheduling prior to the Paul Chryst era ESPECIALLY during the Alvarez years was even worse.

In six years above they’ve played 3 P5 schools.
